Re: how to use my new outboard

Is it possible to go back to the Seller and have them show you?

If the outboard hasn't been used in a long time and wasn't stored away properly its most likely not going to start.

Don't mess with the knobs they are to adjust the air/fuel mixture to the carb.

If you want to try and start it then hook up the a gas tank with 50:1 mixed gas, squeeze the bulb on the fuel line until hard, pull out the choke knob and then pull the rope. If it starts or starts and dies then push the choke back in.
Make sure your starting the motor in a container with water in it.

Good Luck

P.S.
The "B" stands for Boy. If it was a "G" then you would have had a girl motor. The boy motors tend to be more reliable and run a lot quieter then the girl outboards.

no he lives 3 hours away and we dont have his number

he got it started but it was chopy so he started screwing with both the knobs to try and make it run better after he admited that he didnt know what they did cause it was his sons boat and not i starts and dies realy realy quickly.

is there a rount about area that the two (top and bottom) knobs should be in to get it started before fine tuning.

and do i start it with the choke knob in or out.

Re: how to use my new outboard

When the motor is cold the choke knob needs to be pulled out to start and then pushed back in usually fairly quickly.

The original settings were probably correct but the carburetor may have been gummed up causing it to run bad.
If you want it to run good you should rebuild the carb.

Check out the FAQ section for instructions on how to rebuild a carb.
I'm not sure what the basic settings are for that motor. Do a search for "carburetor settings" or "carb settings" (title search only) and you should come up with something for that motor.

The letter "B" at the end of the model # doesn't mean anything.

Re: how to use my new outboard

4936B is indeed a 4hp from 1969. The B has no significance although I must admit I like the theory that it indicates its gender !

The two knobs central and one above the other are the mixture adjusting screws. The top one is the idle mixture the bottom one is the high speed mixture. Set then both in the centre of the 3/4 of a turn or so of their range of movement.

Pull the choke knob fully to start and return as soon as possible as it warms up.

The lever on the RHS is the throttle (your left as you look at it)

The procedure for adjusting the mixture screws can be found in TD's "Top Secret File" pinned in second place at the head of the index.

Several others in that file worth reading, not least the one about an outboard that has been siting for a while. Much of the advice is applicable to any engine with a new owner.

Re: how to use my new outboard

ok ill go read those here in a sec

i went out and putting both knobs to full counterclock wise and the choke all the way out is the only way it will run maby i should bring it to a place to fiddle with the carb this week.

ha i just saw on google looking for carb settings that some motors run of different oil/gas mixtures well im just using the gas it came with till it runs out then i was just going to use 2 stroki oil and make it to the potency all my weed wackers and stuff use is that ok or what

No. Weed-whacker oil is not made for an outboard. Use TCW-3 rated outboard motor oil at a 50:1 ratio.

You'll probably have to rebuild the carburetor. Sounds like it's clogged.

If the gas that came with the outboard is not FRESH dump it in your vehicles gas tank and mix up some new stuff. Make sure the gas tank is clean and free from debris.

Re: how to use my new outboard

ok thank you very much for all the info you have given me it will sure help me in the long run.

ill take it to a repair shop the first time to get the carb cleaned ill also have them check everything else (like theres a lot there :p) and make sure nothing else is going bad.

what is a base price for that i figure some one could do it on there luch break if its an easy fix or be done with in in like 30 min. i was guessing about 50 bucks at most i dont want to get riped off.

Re: how to use my new outboard

Your right to assume someone can do it on their lunch break but your off on the price.
1 hour minimum @ $80+ an hour. Then you have the cost of the kit which could be $20-$40.
Your looking at $100 minimum.

Rebuilding the carb is pretty easy so you might want to give it a try yourself.

What you can do right now is remove the carb and then take the bowl off. Take the float and needle out and spray the carb out real good with carb cleaner. Put everything back together and it will probably run a lot better.

If your successful with that then go ahead and rebuild it since it's not much harder.

Not to be a smart *****, but being a canoe owner myself and you being a self admitted new boater... Save the hassle and $$$, put the outboard in the garage and go out paddling for the first season... Any canoe with a 4hp outboard that runs decent is a handfull...
