I have a 77 mark twain with a 165 hp mercruiser and pre alpha outdrive. When running on the muffs this afternoon I noticed water coming from the weep hole. I just replaced the water pump housing impeller and all. Also the upper driveshaft seal and o ring. The upper oil screw is showing signs of oil water in the oil. It is milky looking at the top. I am going to drain it and pull the lower again any suggestions. Do I need to reseal the whole thing upper and lower or something else.

Re: water coming from weep hole

I should also add the exhaust bellows is broke so it floods the lower half with water. I believe I will have water at the weep hole all the time when running. Let me know if this is correct. I have both halves apart now. I put 20psi on both halves apart with air from a blow gun with a rubber tip and don't hear any air moving. Could all of this be from the little o-ring between the two halves. The shift shaft and seal were replaced 2 years ago when I had oil coming from the weep hole and found the shaft rusted bad. Thanks in advance, Brian

There is a cavity between the shift shaft and the bottom of the drive, any water will drain to prevent freeze damage.Perfectly normal. The little O ring is for the oil passage , make sure it is in there.

O.k water from the weep hole is o.k. Now on to the problem of the water in the gear lube. Is there any seals in the upper half of the outdrive that coexist between the water cavity and the gear case. I hear no air when filling the cavity with air. If there is a little grit in the lower where the little oring sits will it leak. Also will a little silicon on that o ring help keep it sealed up better. Brian

Why not tell us everything that is wrong, everything you have done instead of the 1 question at a time

In my first post I did talk about water in the oil. This is the last thing that I know is wrong. Water in the lower unit oil looks milky. Any suggestions.

Was there any water in the big bellows.A bad seal(s) in the water pump base could allow water into the unit.

If you have water in the oil you may have bad upper or lower seals. Seal removal and replacement should be left to the pros.

Special tools are required to remove and install the new seals

You could bring them your drive and have them pressure test it and fix the problem.

Re: water coming from weep hole

The base should include:
1 base with 2 seals installed
a base gasket
a base "O" ring.
All are critical for keeping water out.
did you notice any oil on the driveshaft when you split the unit?
If you did, the upper unit oil seal may be leaking.

The driveshaft looked clean except for the "mercury" grease that was on the splines as recommended. Didn't notice any oil just grease. I did replace that seal in the upper that the driveshaft goes through. When I put pressure on the unit no air come out of there any way is that right. all of the things with the pump were replaced they came in the kit.
