Hey guys, I have a AQ125A with a bad alternator. Sitting on my shelf I have a motorcraft 130 amp that is real close to fitting minus a little modding. Is there anyway that I can get this to work woth my engine? The regulator on the existing says its 14 volt but the motorcraft says 12 volt.......any thoughts?

The replacement alternator must be marine rated. Is it?

An alternator "rebuild" is often nothing more than a brush replacement. See if you can get brushes for the alternator you have. They are usually easy to change.

I agree with mischief. It will run you about $ 25 bucks for a rebuild. Besides the one you have is what they call an alternater ignition driven. Its somewhat different.

Re: 1982 AQ125A alternator question

The problem is the dumb_ _ _ that I bought the boat from let the bilge fill up with water and everything external on the engine was solid rust, i've rebuilt the thing from ground up but now need a new alternator and starter. I doubt they can be rebuilt, I had a 3' cheater bar on it and it wouldn't move at all. I was just hopeing that I could use my shelved unit instead, and no, im sre it's not marine rated.

You want both of those electrical parts to be marine rated, as they are supposed to be built to resist/supress sparking. Always a bad thing in a closed environment.

I would start with Ebay, Iboats, Boatfix. Doug Russell is thorough, but expensive.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a "alternater ignition driven" alternator? Is that a 1 wire, two wire or three wire? Is there anyway I can test it?

Re: 1982 AQ125A alternator question

I dont think they were that expensive to rebuild. These are a Paris Rhone ( something like that) altenator. I had altenatorts rebuilt that had bad bearings, frozen solid and worked great after rebuild. Also had starters full of rust rebuilt that turned out fine. Best u can do is take it to a shop and have them check it out. Or shell out the 800 bucks for a new one. Your call...

A good shop should replace the bearing and any other wear items in a rebuild.

I took my alternator to a shop today and he said it would cost more to rebuild it then it waout to by a replacement. He quoted me 249 for a comparable one, marine of course, 60 amps though. On the flip side, He has a replacement starter (marine) with more power then the original and it's only149.99.

Thats a pretty fair price, the 149.99 prie. You can contact the folks at DB electrical and see what they got.

If i remember right and some one let me know if im wrong, volvo used a couple different altenators on the 125a engine and one have a bigger belt, i remember ordering an altenator belt for mine and the marina asked what sized altenator is on my boat. Guess the more powerful one had a bigger pulley.
