No, it goes from the bottom of your crankcase to the top of it on the starboard side of the motor. It is a little thin black hose. It allows unburnt oil that pools in the bottom bearing end cap to be pumped up to you top bearing
for lube and burning. It breaks from age & oil causing a lean condition in the motor.

Hi Corm,

Believe I found the hose, it was behind the starter, on the starboard side as you would be sitting in the boat. Looks to be in good shape, pulled plugs and put new one in, old ones came out wet, boat was sitting for a week. Going to back down the mixture and check after I get back. Going to test now.

Re: 78 Merc 850 Cold Start Problem

Well, after much fiddling and adjusting, I got the motor to start on its own. Took three tries, cranking for about 45 seconds each time. I found that I was trying to get the choke flaps close to the throat of the card with the retaining nut for the choke flap pivot. Wrong thinking. The choke flap it self has a rise in the center of the front side, and the covers in front of the flaps also has a ramp built into the center. By leaving the choke flaps slightly loose, just a little play, the choke flap closes and hits the ramps pushing the choke flap against the mouth of the carb. Still have a little fine tuning to do and find someone to help with the lync and sync. If any one has direction for the procedure for this motor it would be appreciated. Please e-mail to bpg@integrity.com .

Thank you all for your help and time,

B Greg
