I'm new to the forum here and have found much useful information to get my new to me 1954 Johnson 5.5hp CD up and running well. Thanks for the information so far.

To ensure it lives a long life, I planned to replace the impeller, but in order to do so, the powerhead must come off. Does anyone have a source for the powerhead gasket for this motor? I've spent a couple hours looking on line and have found nothing. Contact info, part numbers...would be of great help and much appreciated.

I just ordered a pair of them from Napa last week. Pretty sure i-boats has them too. Sierra part number: 18-2894.

You can use RTV silicone clean well , and apply, if it is the gasket between the motor head and and lower unit. It is low pressure seal , sometimes if gasket is good shape you can reuse, with a little gasket seal.

Thanks for the quick responses. I'll have to check the part number @ I-Boats the year range they had detailed did not go back to '54. I'll see if they have this part you provided.

I would not use RTV anywhere on an outboard. Too often I've pulled a big rubbery glob of that out of a cooling passage or carb jet of a blown motor...

Most places only show parts back to 1956. Don't worry about it, though. All the consumable parts from 1954-55 are the same as 1956.

I agree with Chinewalker. Don't use RTV for the base gasket. The oil and gas in the exhaust water will make short work of it. Then you'll be looking for a replacement powerhead.

I normally don't reply to something tacked onto a year-old and unrelated thread, but what the hey---here goes.

303892 is obsolete. There was a problem with those motors and that thick gasket was replaced with two thin gaskets and a baffle plate. So, question is, does yours have that stainless steel baffle plate update?

If not, and you don't want to update it, then at least use two thin gaskets to get sufficient thickness. They are part number 304588. Any Evinrude dealer can get them for you.

It is a plate intended to keep exhaust and hot water discharge from away from the lower crankshaft seal. It sort of worked, but didn't completely solve the problem in salt water.
