I am going to be buying anew trigger from iboats!! There seems to be 2 different ones? Which one would you suggest? I have a 87 merc 115 Inline 6!! The one that is one there is working fine but all the wires coming from it are beat up!! If i touch them the coating falls off!! The white wires are the worst!! Soo im just gonna re[place it!! Is there anything i should know about replaceing it? I know i will need a flywheel puller!! But will the timing need to be set again? I hope not!!

Any help would be great!! This forum saved me from selling my boat many times!! I wanna thank everyone!!

I've done this before, Not too bad to say the least....You can get it using a crows foot wheel puller just make sure you go to a hardware store with one of your INNER flywheel hub bolts, and see if they can get you a couple like it except about 3 inches or longer. I found mine at Lowes...OR if you have the genuine Merc flywheel puller, that would work best. When you get the flywheel free, loosen the bolts on the top cap that is installed over the trigger, and the timing arm connection as well, trace your wires and replace them with the ones from the new trigger 1 AT A TIME!!!!! Throw it back together, and it would be in your best interest to check the timing with a light to make sure. Having a buddy around during this really helps.

IMHO, Id rather have it out of the water and on a trailer...The nuts that hold the trigger wires on the switch boxes have a tendency to fall out of your hand easy enough and friend.....they dont float:( Also, you would have to pull the entire flywheel to get at the trigger. The trigger wont fit past the bare hub, neither will the trigger cage. The flywheel is splined one way so you are in good shape there. Mine was also changed due to rotting wires, mostly because it was a factory unit, as I wouldnt doubt yours is also. Being an ignition related part, Id DEFINATELY want to check timing after things are buttoned back up...Just a thought-------Bob

Agree. Other than dropping tools and fasteners in the water it is certainly something that can be done at the dock. You'll be a happy man if you get the proper flywheel puller. Good idea to double check timing afterwards, as I notice the Sierra linkage has adjustable length.

Caution: Don't break the timing pointer off when you remove the flywheel, but I do recommend you leave it there otherwise you'll need to do quite a bit of measurements to reposition it properly again later.

Trigger plate required is Merc p/n 96455A 9

Iboats offers the Sierra equivalent: Sierra 18-5798 Trigger Assembly

Thanks

eBay is the place for them. I think you'll agree.
