I just got a 1977 mercury 1500 thunderbolt

Now my problem is setting up the trim and tilt controls it didnt come with anything but a pump for the hydraulics.

How is all of this is to be set up i cant find a manual that just deal with that for more then a few pictures they are very brief on this subject.

I have 4 hydraulics lines 2 for each side and 1 black line with 2 wires, I'm sure that's for the motor but shouldn't there be 2 sets.

I'm including pictures maybe this will help

Here is a link to the install manual for that trim system. It has lots of useful info.

To answer your specific questions here you go.

1) There are two sizes of hydraulic lines/fittings. One large and one small for each cylinder. The pump has four ports on the bottom, two large and two small. Can connect either small line to either small port and either large line to either large port.

2) The black wire is from the tilt limit switch in the starboard cylinder housing. Its purpose is to automatically switch off the UP trim if the motor rises above a safe limit. Most users of these old motors just disconnect that cable and short the two mating wires together because the switch usually fails and its a pain to repair/replace.

I have a wiring diagram somewhere that I will scan and try to post here later tonite. Does you trim motor have one or two solenoids?

Not really sure what you have there but the pump/reservoir looks to be a different vintage than the hydraulic rams. The pump is from a 2-line system and the rams of course are a 4-line system. Can't identify the part next to the pump in the third picture, the part with 2 lines running to it.

Thanks again for taking the time out and answer my questions

can i change that 2 port plate to 4

and by any chance do you have a service manual for this motor i have noticed a few things and i want to make sure they are alright.

There is so much to putting on a new motor next time its going to the shop

Re: Setting up tilt and trim(HELP).

You have a pump that is for an inboard/outboard...inboard motor, outboard drive! that little elbow is the feed line to the steering actuator, the other two ports are for the hydraulic lines to the rams! that pump is convertable to a four line pump for outboards, but the cost of the proper valve body, and the work involved probably makes it non-feasible

Monk-Monk, The 4 hydraulic lines to the trim cylinders are really two sets of two. That is the port down hose is directly connected to the starboard down line. Can't he install a Tee connector to convert from 2 to four lines? Will the balance of the pump work?

Is that from a mercruiser?

Re: Setting up tilt and trim(HELP).

I dont know where the pumps came from they gave me them when i picked up the motor. The motor was rebuilt never put in or fired his dad died and it went into starge a year until i got it the boat is gone he didn't know what parts went with it he had a ton of stuff in that building, i also need to find an external harness for the key and all the gauges. I think i need a choke solenoid i have a weighted spring and wire theres no hook up for the manual but i have a gray wire just hanging there that was connected to my old one that had electric choke. if anyone know of them let me know.

can i change the reservoir?

but that t- thing might work i don't see why not
