Anyone have suggestions of a good wax to use to brighten up the stripes on my boat. Or a way to remove the oxidation. I was told that maguires has a 3 step cleaner but i have not found it.

Re: what wax to use

I hope I don't get spoken to on this thread, like I have gotten in the past, but I will try anyway. I used that McGuire crap, and that is saying it nicely...so I don't get the GODS on here mad. My very strong suggestion is to search a product called vertglas. My boat had a decent amount of oxidation on it I used this three step the way they suggest and boy I am stocked oh better make sure to clarify stocked is happy, excited and so on. Vertglass tells you to do 6-8 layers dont worry not that hard of a job. I used other stuff in the past and if it lasted 3 weeks that was a long time. This stuff works the BOMB now let me clarify BOMB like stocked , happy, excited and so on I hope this thread does not get me on any more thin ice around here good luck.

Re: what wax to use

Please dont make the mistake I have. I have red strips on my boat that were cloudy I just bought the boat and wanted them to look nice bright red, Bought 120 dollars worth of 3m products rubbing compounds, wax , glaze buffer the whole 9. Started the processs and 6 hours later when it was all said in done the boat did look nice, red was better but not how I wanted it. So my grandparents and there friends that lived on the lake all there life said to use vasiline and I thought it was a joke. Finally after a little convincing I went to the store bought some put it on and wow it looked like new nice bright red no chalky look. 1 month later still looks awesome. Total process took me 2 dollars and 10 mins. Cant bet it dont get fooled like I did. JUST TRY IT AND YOU WILLL SEE. I heard vertglass can chip and become yellow and is a pain to get off. Know people that only put it on when selling a boat. But I have never tryed it my self and the people I know that used it. Sold there boat shortly after, Guess it almost like a floor wax. TRY IT AND LMK HOW YOU MAKE OUT.

dk,

Is the red on your boat gelcoat or vinyl decal? I'm just wondering what surfaces the Vaseline would work on. I have both on my boat and it works on both I'll be a happy man. :)

Once you have the oxidation under control use "Babe's Boat Bright" Spray it on wet and wipe. They also have a water spot remover solution.

hey you can use it on both. On my boat its a gel coat. But I have also used it on my jet ski decals and it also came out great. this stuff work wonders I had a bunch of dull plastic on my jet ski to hit it with Vaseline and color came back like new. I mean it was really really bad and it came out great. My mother also used it on a 66 thunderbird soft top and it came out so rich looking and doesn't blister it like amoral does. Lmk how you make out just try a little spot and you will be hooked for life.

Vaseline! ;), I TOLD YOU ALL SO!, about 2 yrs ago when I first joined this forum! and I was immediately put down for suggesting it  It works great, so just take your time, and let it soak in. I'm a cranky, achy, tired, old guy, but Wise, :D So, I do the least work it takes to get the best finish,,, If you want to, you can wax, or polish later on down the road over this. I just found out about another quick, easy, tip,,, "Pledge", as a detailer only to refresh the finish, if you need to, if the vaseline, or major polish job ever gets dull ;)

Gee, wonder if I should try the vaseline on my 33 year old fiberglass hull with gelcoat? I put 2 coats of Mothers Cleaner wax with carnuba using a 10" polishing wheel and it looks good but not exactly how Id like her to look. Maybe Ill try a small spot and see what the difference is.

The silicons in the vaseline will penetrate your finish, and should deepen the color, plus bring out your shine even more, giving you a "Wow" effect!

Wet sand and buff. Will last longer. Wash with water and wax once or twice a year. Yes it will take time but it will look great when done. Go buy a high speed buffer from harbor freight. Get a 3m twisted wool pad and 3m perfect it 3000 compound. After that I used the cheap Turtle wax polishing compound though not really necessary. Then pick a good carnuba or marine wax. These pics are from before the wax.

My gel coat was bad enough I had to use 800->1000->->1500 grit sandpaper. Use the lower grit to remove all the oxidation. Use a block as much as you can to keep it even. You'll sand and start to feel it get smooth. Rinse it then dry, you'll see as it dries where the oxidation still is. Then move up grits as you need.
When you wash your boat don't use soap if you can help it and it will make the finish and wax last longer.
It will look like glass when you're done and last.

I'm sold...I'll try it. Just curious as to how thick you apply it and whether you rub it back off like a wax. If you rub it back off, how long do you typically let it soak in? Any other tips for this?

We use pledge for touch ups on show cars. Works great for in between cleanings. Works great on interior too.

Re: what wax to use

And thanks mike you did tell me so and I tryed and love it wont ever use anything else.

I came on here in June 07, and shortly after that I replied to a post about restoring a finish using vaseline, because I had recently found it worked great, on just about anything on the boat, but I can't find THAT post anymore? I guess all the older posts get dropped  Anyway, that's the original one I was referring to.

I'm glad it worked for you dkorzun, as well as it did for me, ;) it is like a moisturizing conditioner for your boat,,,lol :D
