What is involved with installing a tach on an older outboard 2 stroke motor? Simple or advanced mechanics involved?

How old and what motor? Some are simple and others don't even have tachometers made for them any more. Need to know what we are working on here.

The most popular (I have found) for a older outboard (like my 1978 70HP) is to mount a "Tiny Tach" which requires you to wrap the tach signal around a spark plug wire, bolt down the ground wire, route the wires and screw down the tach... It's about as easy as it gets... And reasonably priced too IMHO...

They have models with hour meters to boot... You just email or call them with your engine year and # cyls along with how long the leads need to be (you can't cut them to lengh or shorten them up yourself). I received mine a week after placing my order. It's powered by an internal battery that lasts 5 years so you don't need to hook up any additional powers or ground. About the only disadvantage is no backlight, but I don't sit there and stare at the tach anyways....

Good luck,

Billy
