I have a ford 2.3 with a omc drive on my boat. the prob im having is on cold start up the choke has to be all the way open and the throttle wide open and it will shoot out black smoke until it clears up and u rev it up and down till it warms up. and if im putting in a slow wake zone or just cruzin at idle for a while then u go to give it gas it back fires thru the carb u have to feather the trottle a litte before u go wide open. at wot it runs fine. after about 3 or 4 tanks of fuel i check my dipstick and the oil leavel has gone up and it stinks like fuel. so its odveous its getting way too much fuel. i had the carb totally rebuilt by a carb shop and still the same. so i went ahead and bought a brand new carb because thats what the carb shop that rubuilt my old one reccamended and still no diffrence. i have brand new plugs ,new wires, new points and everything is adjusted to spec.checked timing and it is good. brand new timing belt as well. compression is about 130 in all 4 holes. brand new fuel water separator. there is no in line fuel filter on my boat. im at a total loss on what could be wrong any info of suggestions would be greatly appriciated thanks...................

cracked carb body
auto choke defective or out of adj.

Dont see this with 2 diffrent carbs. If you had you flame arrester off the to check choke rule that out.If your backfireing through carb check ignition timing.Sounds to slow. Also fuel pressure.Make sure fuel pump didnt fail as it will bypass fuel into engine.

how exactly do u check fuel pressure on a carb motor with a mech pump? could the pump be bad? the only pumps i have ever seen go bad would be lack of fuel not too much fuel

With a marine mechanical fuel pump, you have a third hose that runs up to the base of the carb. If the diaphram in the pump starts leaking the fuel is sucked into the base of the carb. in order to keep it out of the engine compartment. A really bad leak can cause flooding if the engine timing is incorrect. I'm not sure it will do so to the effect you seem to be having, but a bad fuel pump can mean too much fuel.
