Cooling System Question

Hi everyone,
I have a 1972-125 horsepower Johnson outboard that I need advice on. The impeller doesn't seem to be working. The heads are over heating. I just put in the impellar and I am not getting any water coming out of the exhaust ports, while engine is running.

This engine has a thermostat housing.

Every outboard that I have owned, {Evinrude And Johnson} usually will spit water out of the exhaust ports. Is this normal for the 125s to not spit out water, from the exhaust ports?

If it is, how can I tell if the impellar is pumping water through the system?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Cooling System Question

Your 125 should be like all the others you have owned. If you have a new impeller and no sign of the water droplets out of the exhaust relief ports-you may have a defective stat (vernatherm.) The cool water needs to circulate through the block. If the stat is not functioning properly, it will prevent water flow out of the block, causing an overheat.

Are you sure you got the water tube back in the water pump?

Re: Cooling System Question

Do I need the thermostat, or can I take it out and leave it out?
