I bought a stratos fish and ski with a 130 evenrude about a month ago. The boat ran well when I took it for an hour long test drive, and compression tested at 120 on all 4 cyliders. A couple of days after I bought the boat I took it out and it ran ok to the first fishing hole, but after an hour of fishing the boat started easiliy but would make a humming noise and die about a second after putting it in gear. The boat finally got going in gear after a few times and would run well at mid range but that scenario repeated itself 2 more times that day before we finally left the lake. Later that day I noticed some white fluid leaking out of the lower unit area, so I took it to the local shop and they discovered that the lower unit oil was all mixed with water and was milky white. We discovered that the shift shaft seal was bad so we replaced all the lower unit seals and gaskets, and the mechanic checked the shaft and bearings, and said that they all looked ok. I got the boat back yesterday and took it to the lake for a test run, but even though the boat starts easily, and idles fine in neutral, it still would make a humming noise and stall when put in reverse. I never did get to try the boat in foreward gear since there were high winds pushing me into shore, and I didn't want to chance it. My mechanic said the boat ran fine in foreward gear at idle speed in the tank at the shop. It seems to be running progressively worse every time, and really seems to act up much worse when it is out on the water. I thought at first it may have been a bearing of some sort when I heard the audible hum before it would die each time, and since there was water mixed in with the lower unit. But now I am wondering if it is an ignition, or some sort of power problem since the boat really has never showed as much power getting out of the hole as I thought it should. My mechanic is going to meet me at the lake next week to see for himself. Anyone have any Ideas?

where is the hum coming from? can you isolate it? but idle speed could just be the problem, or clogged carb jets.

It's hard to pinpoint the source of the hum since I am on my own on the water when it happens, and have to work the throttle to cause the noise. I think that the noise is comming from the upper part of the motor, and not the lower unit, but I will try to get back out to the lake with a friend and try to get a better idea of the location if the weather ever lets up. Do you think that the water mixed in to the lower unit was an unrelated problem, or do you think that there is a bad bearing, or some thing else in the lower unit that is not running smoothly and causing more of a load on the engine when put into gear? Could the carb jets being clogged cause a humming noise? I was told by the previous owner that he only used the boat a couple of times in the last few years. He also indicated that he had trouble with the motor stalling at idle from time to time, but said it was better after the motor got warmed up, could that tell us anything about the source of the problem? Thanks for your help.

humming noise in neutral , how is the water pump anyway?

I'd run it with muffs on a hose, then you can get right up to it and track the noise down.

Sorry, I must not have been to clear. The engine runs pretty well in neutral. It sometimes dies after idleing a few minutes, but it will consistantly hum for a second and then stall after I put it in gear and give it any gas what so ever. The motor even seems to have run fine in the water tank while idleing in gear when my mechanic tested it. I have read some posts that suggest getting a repair manual, what would be the best place to buy a good manual cheap? By the way, I had the mechanic change the water pump when he worked on the lower unit this week, looks like its working fine.

so it only starts to hum when put in gear ?
otherwise its quiet.

and the mechanic did a seal job, but it was humming before he worked on it anyway. Could be unrelated.
But I'd say its in the lower end vs engine.

same thing, run it on muffs and track it down.
Get your manual, service manual ...not owner manual.

Re: 95' Evenrude 130 hums then stalls when put in gear. Please Help!

So I took my mechanic for a ride a few days ago, and he said that he thought that the hum was coming from one of the four carbs. When you give it gas from idle it has a vibration like one of the cylinders is missing and then there is a humming noise and it trys to die. If you get past that point without dieing, it runs well at high end. It does not improve after warming up. He said he would pull the carbs and look for a blockage, or problem in the low end setting. I called him today and he said he pulled the carbs and cleaned them out and the problem is still there. Now he said he might try a link n sink, but he sounds like he is running out of ideas. Anyone out there have any suggestions?

Carb flange gasket? Vibrating like a reed. Just a guess.
