Alright folks, I've come to these forums and have done a lot of reading. ALL of it very informative and helpful.
BUuuUuuuUUt......
Here's my story:
I purchased this Evinrude "Big Twin 30" from an old buddy of mine for $100. My intention was to get it running, make a video of it in a barrel and post it on you-tube for my father to see. (I was trying to be sneaky for fathers-day) I fuigured if I showed him this random motor and said "Wuddya think of this?", and I'm sure his reply would have been something along the lines of "Who's got money to buy one of those?". But either way it would have been a delightful surprise for him.
BUuuUuuuUUt......
It didn't pan out that way. I had to fix the impeller housing which I was told before hand had a broken bolt. And I did that. And I also made a stand to hold the motor up to work on it (about 12 inches to high). So after I got it back together, put a barrell under it and turned on the hose (cue smoke break). I pulled on the motor for 10 minutes, Nothing, 10 more minutes, nothing, needless to say after 90 minutes I had tried spraying in a pre-mix right in the intake, I tried starting fluid, I talked nice to it, I talked dirty to it. I did everything short of hitting it with a bat.
SOooOoooOO.....
My plan had failed so I decided just to tell my father and get his "two-cents" on this beast to see what he wanted to do, work on it, sell it, whatever. I fuigured if anything I could but the pressure tank on ebay and get half my money back.
The next day my father stopped by and says "wow that's big" LIKE I DIDN'T NOTICE WHEN I PUT IT IN MY GEO. He walked around it a couple times. He peered in the crevices, and poke at wires and linkage and says "What's the compression like?" Of course having pulled and pulled for 90 minutes the previous day I think my reaction might have been a bit biased. But I pretty much said try it yourself. And this man has bad shoulders and probably shouldn't be pulling on a 30 hp motor. How's the saying go, something about hindsight and 20/20? Well yeah, he reaches up to pull the thing, which the recoil is up by his head and he's about 6'2", he gives it a tug and the stand moved so I decided I should hold onto the lower unit so he can "give it his all" and that worked pretty well. It only took him 1 pull, and smoke starts spewing, POP POP POP, prop start buzzing at mach5, and it's RUNNING. ON 1 PULL. I guess I just warmed it up for him.
So there we are, motor running, no water...anywhere and Pie-Eyed dad going "HOW DO I SHUT IT OFF?" Being the smart one I guess i pulled out the choke and killed it right away.
Now I was hold the lower unit right when it started. I got lucky I still have all my digits. This is getting long isn't it? Hopefully someone reads this and finds it amusing.
There were are, he's in a mild shock, I'm inspecting my appendages, and I look at him and say "HAPPY FATHERS DAY"
So after I repaired the impeller housing and I was putting it all back together I wondering what kept water out of the gearcase? Apparently nothing because I checked the lube and yes it was all milky, Glad I did that now, so my father went ahead and ordered a manual and a seal kit and they're en-route. So while I'm waiting, and I'm up late at night when I don't have to watch a baby and I can do stuff, like right now it's 3:30am, I was outside inspecting other parts of the motor, I twisted the throttle and it seemed like it wasn't going as far as it could. I came in the house, hopped on the forum and looked around a bit and found that theres a thing that when it's not in gear it limits the throttle. Hooray. I go outside and sure enough I put it in forward, twist the throttle, and it goes, goes some more, keeps going, and right when I have it twisted all the way, the carb snaps back. WTF?! I was still holding the throttle all the way up but when I got so far the gears where the throttle takes a 90* turn upwards, the "Un-meshed" and slipped apart. Hooray, something else to fix. I undid the litte gear on the end of the tiller shaft and come to find out that's broken in half.......WHat do I Do? "I can fix this" I say to myself. Nope I can't. I drilled a hole "kiddy-corner" in the gear and run a rivet through it. That failed miserably. I drilled another hole through it and the shaft and rivet them together. Not a bright Idea I thought but the gear was already junk so I fuigured what can it hurt? Apparently the shaft will snap after you drill a hole in it......how was that thing again...hindsight and 20/20?. Ok live and learn. Now here's my dillema, I have bored probably a couple dozen people, entertained a few, and maybe got one guy going "Hey I woulda done that too." Hopefully at least one guy thinks that. But I have this broken gear, which now resembles a metallic swiss cheese, with a screw in it. And I also have a broken shaft this gear is mounted to. I think I can order a piece of brass to replace the shaft. but the cog on the shaft looks very abuse (the cog where the tiller handles pivots) I was wondering, and hoping, wishing and dreaming (thinking happy thoughts) that maybe prehaps somebody out there has at least 1 piece of paper, a magic wand, or Hopefully some good old fashioned experience, and information. To put a long story short I need to know if the gear on the end of the tiller shaft that does the 90* bend is a "universal" type thing with other motors or will I have to sell my soul to get one? And would I be able to order a tiller shaft with a cog from a different model motor? MY Shaft is about 9 1/4 inches......end to end. And the ones I see on ebay are 12" or 17"
Hopefully someone knows whats what in the evinrude world.
oh yeah. evinrude big twin 30 model 25022

I am sure there is a question in there somewhere, but I am not inclined to try to dig it out.

Could you just give us the question?

Well, I now feel I know this motor.

You are going to need a new rod and gear for the tiller handle. You can buy them from a marine wrecker like Laings or Twin City Outboard, on eBay or from online buy and sell guides like Craigslist.

Check your coils. If they are cracked, sweaty or discoloured they are bad. Original OMC coils have a 100% failure rate and are no good even if they spark. Cleaning and setting the points is one of the first things you should do will a "new" old outboard.

If the motor doesn't start within the first half dozen pulls then something is wrong. Weak spark, low compression, dirty carb etc. Pull for 90 mins will only hurt your shoulder.

Bookmark this site...www.aomci.org and visit the free Webvertize ads there often. You need to replace the broken throttle gear and while you're doing that, read the Top Secret file...especially Awakening A Sleeping Outboard...at the top of this forum. Nice motors those Big Twins...have a pair on my '63 15-foot runabout...they have a lot of umph!

Re: '56 Big Twin 30 "issues"

I, for one, was entertained by the story.

Follow Wayne's advice, go to Laingsoutboard.com and get the tiller handle. Then go to the top secret file and learn how to pull the flywheel and replace the coils. 99% that is why Dad could start it and you could not. While you are in there, spend another $15 and replace the points and condensors. Then rebuild the carb, and try running it only with fuel stabilizer in the gas, so you don't have to rebuild it again next year.

Congratulations! You now have a motor that will most likely outlive you both, and maybe your kids.

Oh, and Happy Fathers Day!

Oh yeah...forgot to mention something. If you have to pull start that beast, pull the recoil starter off and use a rope and the notch in the flywheel...much easier due to the size/diameter of the flywheel. And as WB said, it should fire over and run in 2-3 pulls or something is amiss...so don't crater your shoulder...been there, done that...surgery sux.
