Difference in 4 wire and 5 wire voltage regulator

What is the difference in a 4 wire and 5 wire voltage regulator. I know the tach hooks up to the 5th (white) wire, but why can't the tach hook up to one of the ststor wires instead? Does the white wire go through a resistor or something?

The motor is a 1992 Force 90 hp. It has the Mercury charging system with an actually 6 wire regulator. 2 yellow, 2 red, 1 gray and 1 black. The gray wire is for the tach. Can it be replaced with a 4 wire and can I hook thre tach up to a yellow wire?
