Can't Keep It Running!

Can't seem to keep my 1970 Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 running. It fires up no problem, runs for a few seconds and then dies out. I start it again and same thing - dies out after about 20 seconds or so. Fuel cap on tank is vented, everything looks good but it won't stay running. Today, I tried running the motor in a barrel of water in my driveway and same thing - died out, until - I brought the fuel tank up on a seat in my boat (higher than the outboard motor) and it ran fine. What do you think - I need a new fuel pump maybe?Gravity seems to help the motor run when the tank is higher than the fuel pump. Are fuel pumps expensive for the old Evinrude 9.5's? Easy to install? Is it worth a try?

Sounds as though it is fuel pump problem, pumping the bulb gently should also keep it running, although it could be air ingress into the fuel line. The connector at the engine is the prime suspect for that. Look very carefully for signs of fuel leaking when lightly pressurised either with the bulb or by raising the tank.

The OEM price for a new pump is over $90 so you need to be sure that is the problem. You may be able to find a 3rd party replacement cheaper but I couldn't. you may be able to find an overhaul kit but by all accounts they are fiddly things to overhaul .

This article describes overhauling the old type pumps if you decide to give it a try http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Rebuilding_fuelpump.htm

Does sound like a fuel pump issue. As said, squeeze the bulb and see if it keeps going for you. If so it's an easy fix. Just whatever the pump cost is. I replaced mine in my 140hp last summer for 80 something dollars (OEM) Aftermarket was considerably cheaper but OEM was the way i chose to go.
