1982 4.5hp Evinrude Slippin??

I have '82 4.5hp motor and when i run it wide open it sounds like every 20 or so seconds you hear motor rev up and go back down while in drive position almost like its slippin?? what could be wrong with it? Seem to have just started this this year not too long after i changed impeller.

I would check the prop. to see if it is slipping in it's rubber mount. Best of luck. Rick.

I know that the rubber hub seal wears out. See if it's cracked, dried up or buldging. If so, you can take the prop to a prop shop and have them press a new seal in for ya. They just put some adheisive on it and press it.

ok thanks guys ill check seal at the prop...is there anyway to tell if its slippin down there just by looking at it w/ prop off?? i will look for it being dried up or cracked.

I am not familiar with your prop. You might be able to tell but a simple way to check is to remove the prop and draw a line through the diameter from outside rim across the inside bushing to outside rim. Put it back on and test run it. If it presents the same revving you mentioned pull the prop and if the lines are not aligned, you have a spun prop. They do tend to slip only when working hard as in full throttle but if bad enough can so it at any speed. Rick.

ok i took prop off and seal looked to be ok and pretty tight in there. I drew line with sharpie across and will test run this weekend to see if it moves. If i find out it hasnt moved then what else i could be lookin at?

Lets wait and see about the prop first. I honestly don't know what else it would be when the motor speeds up significantly and the boat does not, although we are talking about a pretty small engine here. Rick.

You arent turning too sharp or trimming the motor way up are ya? It may be somthing as simple as that or a prop full of grass.

no , motor all the way down when running and no sharp turnin.... it use to never do it untill this season. Now it does it like i said every outing about every 20-30 sec. Ill test run and see if prop moved this weekend...i will also maybe try to get some video of it so maybe yall can here better what its doin. I dont notice it affecting the power that much but it does a lil...
