Evinrude 70 Acts like "Rev Limiter" after 5-10min WOT

I was cruising the other day, I normally dont cruise WOT. After about 10 minutes of WOT it started acting like a rev limiter wide open, I could power back and it would be ok but not enough RPM to get on plane. I can shut off, and turn it back on and it's fine, for another 5-10 minutes. It just started doing this the other day.

It begins the "Rev Limiter" effect at about 2800-3500 RPM.

we still need the model # or year. is it running hot? have you check spark immediately when it starts doing this.? could be dropping a coil.

I am no expert but I will give you something that happened to mine. I have 2 tanks a metal one and a plastic one. I normally run off the metal tank and change to the plastic one for reserve ( fresh fuel in it ) well one day I started with the plastic and it did the same symptoms as you described I could run it at 3/4 throttle fine. I changed to the metal and all was well. So you may want to check your tank.

That sound's like the engine is going into SLOW, when you say you can shut it off, restart, and it's OK for awhile, but we need to now the age , or model number. speed limiting overheat warning.

yeah, one of the coils is bad. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. That may explain alot of the problems Ive been having, sometimes its hard to start, it doesnt like to idle sometimes and sometimes it runs fine. But it still is loosing prime. I have to pump the bulb after 20 minutes of sitting with the motor shut off.

When I ordered the new coil, the only one that looks like the ones I have are the ones for 1985-2001. So Im guessing it's a mid to late 80's model VRO with the VRO removed?

heh it was on accident, was checking the spark on each cylinder and #3 wasnt sparking very often, so i swapped cylinder #2 and #3's coil's and cylinder 2 wasnt firing insted of three. Used the same wires from the powerpack.
