long story short:
last summer the piston seized and broke the shear key in the flywheel. i replaced the piston and rings (cylinder wall was not damaged) and finally got the flywheel off. got the motor put back together and i have NO SPARK.

any suggestions to trouble shoot would be helpful.

hints for testing ignition parts would be helpful.

1. Did you check ignition points (clean, no oil residue, not pitted/burned, proper gap/setting and etc.?

2. Is the spacing between the magneto and flywheel correct?

3. Did you have good fire before? Did you check for a cracked flywheel and no damage from the sheared?

4. Can you attach Pics of your ignition system and parts mentioned above?

Re: no spark 4hp chrysler

If you are having trouble loading/adding the attachments, I might be a little help. It took a little experimenting before I got a feel for the process. Attached are dual points on my 1973 35HP Chrysler, they have worked good for years. The setup reminds me of a Tecumseh Lawn Mower?s Engine.

Plus getting the flywheel off is a challenge. I have a flat aluminum bar about 2' long, 2.5 wide with holes drilled to fit over bolts on opposite sides of the flywheel nut. Clearing the flywheel nut enough to get a socket on it. With a break-over, ratchet or etc., the flywheel nut comes off while holding the flywheel still with the al bar. With a WD-40 soaking I will pop the flywheel nut down (with it loosened about 1/8") while prying up on the flywheel and It's OFF! "Good Square Pops vs Hard Banging" or I've been Lucky since about 1985.

aha, mine is broken see the circle on your picture attached. this would be called the contact set right? would that cause the lack in spark?

tough to see in the picture, but the end near your screw driver is broken off.

Re: no spark 4hp chrysler

If the points are not opening (as specified or approx .020") and closing per revolution due to the cam on the crankshaft you will not have a spark. If the points are broken close to where my point file is standing, you should see the break or what broke off to verify. Otherwise, they might just need adjusting.

What do you use your small motor for? I had a 5HP Johnson on a John-Boat before my 35HP Chrysler on a 15' Raycraft. I doubt I would want over a 50HP and simple from how I have enjoyed this 35HP and doing all of my servicing. Just For Fishing!

I don't know the year of year motor but here is a link to the chrysler parts, just select your hp & year then model number.
