fairly easy to replace once you get access to it, I had a look at mine tody and it is not worn at all, but lets hope it does something for you, may just be something to look for in future, I find it hard to believe that someone else has not found a fix for this, it is quite common (well I have seen a couple and I have two now)

Re: 1979 115hp shift problem...not the cable??

think i found my problem. I was disassembling the shift lever assy to remove the bushings and realized that the 'housing' (which is part of the intake) was broke about 3/4 of the way back making it a half-a-circle (if that makes any since) so the slop i was talking about earlier in the post is because of this. Of coarse it was hard to see that without disassembling it. It was riding on only the one outer bushing. I think that gave it enough slop to be my problem. I guess ill will try to find an intake manifold from somewhere thats not too expensive. I feel ive already spent too much on the boat as it is so if anyone is willing to let go of an extra intake manifold lemme know. My motor's # is: J115TLCIM
its a '79 115 Seahorse

So for you guys with the same shifting problem i would check that both of the bushings are secure. Make sure that the bottom half of the housing is solid. Let me know if yours i the same way. Check it real good. You cant see mine without disassembling. But i could feel it by fingering under the bottom.

hhmm so are you saying that when the control is moved it moves the gear lever, but the broken bit makes it "wobbly" and the slack will not allow full gear travel to select forward gear?

I am battling this same problem with my '76 85 Johnson Javelin. Have to pick a gear when adjusting the cable...got it adjusted for forward right now. Haven't checked the shift rod length yet. I replaced the impeller last year, so the lower unit was off recently. I don't think I moved the shift rod from where it was, but it wouldn't hurt to check. Also need to check the shift linkage on the motor for play.

Yup that what im saying. I think it pivots off the one bushing more than it rotates like it should. Im no expert on outboards but this is my theory

That was my problem. ALL FIXED!!! Here's the before/after pictures of the my fix. I decided to modify my intake manifold a little bit and make a new "mount" or whatever you might call it because it was free for me and just took me an hour or so.
