I haven't really visited Chicago, whether by land or water, but I hear it's a pretty sweet place.

I'd like to take my Capri from say, Benton Harbor, MI, to there. Nice little trip.

What places are within docking/walking distance to visit? Is transient dockage usually available for overnight during the week? weekend? I'd imagine the biggest city on the Great Lakes should have a good number of slips.

Re: Chicago?

I lived there for 3 years and know that the wait list for slips is 3 years. Always about 680 people in line. Go to www.chicagoharbors.info to check them out. They have the rates there, but I'm guessing you have to get in line early, but maybe not. Anyways, they are all beautiful, I never got my boat in one, but I had friends at Diversey harbor and Burnham Harbor. For a smaller boat Diversey harbor or Belmont harbor would probably be the place, other harbors are for large boats.

They are all operated by Westrec marinas

Re: Chicago?

No doubt you can get fuel and transient slip but I would trailer 'er over to NW Indiana and put in on the south side of Chicago somewhere.
Benton Harbor to Chicago is too far, IMO anyway.

hmmm...perhaps I should call on overnight slip availability.

Are the conditions on lower Lake Michigan nasty? Obviously common sense and checking the marine forecast are safe measures but I wouldn't call myself a seasoned captain with an unsinkable vessel

Some common sense (no gales, no small craft advisories, carry a VHF radio) is all I need. I've restored this vessel myself, I know what's in it :)

I reserved a slip in Burnham Harbor...$69/night without power. Gonna make the trip Saturday and come back Sunday. We shall see how it goes. I'll post pix

Darn, wish I'd seen this thread earlier. My boat is in a slip at Burnham Harbor and I love it there. I would have been happy to help you out or give you some suggestions. If I remember correctly, there may have been a small craft advisory on Sunday. I hope everything went well and that you had a safe trip. I was on the lake Saturday morning trolling for salmon on my buddy's boat, but other than that wasn't down there much this past weekend.
