Help, 1988 Starcraft Islander, Merc 4.3L, Thunderbolt Ignition.
Boat runs fine for short time then dies, turn the key nothing, no click dead, lights out, 30 seconds later runs fine then repeats.
So far I've found that I loose power to the purple wire going to the coil, this is the key switch wire, I'm going a try new switch, I think next, I replaced the coil and this did fix it. I've wiggled evey wire and terminal and can't fine any thing after awile the problem is gone until next time i use the boat. I also noted i had power to the 60 amp CB while no power to the Starter small solenoid.
Funny thing is after the boat died I watched my panel light on for 5 seconds then off for 5 seconds repeating itself like on a timer, but don't stay broke long enough to fine a problem. Any ideas?
mean while i'll get my color penciles out and study my diagrams.
Thank you

99% sure that all engine grounds are okay. I just overhauled the engine.

also, check All battery connections, power connections, everywhere. at battery, at starter and/or solenoid, any power distribution blocks, fuse panel.

Re: Electrical intermitting problem kills engine

I checked grounds again and cleaned main engine harness conector, problem happened breifly again, I tried a differernt ignition switch, so far good but time will tell, I noticed voltage on the coil runs about one volt lower than the red supply wire. The coil wire powers the electric choke. I found i didn't have my carb choke linkage hooked up propper and the choke could not open fully. What are the chances of the choke shorting out the coil wire intermittantly causing the intermittant loss of power on the ignition wires?
Thanks

Re: Electrical intermitting problem kills engine

I recently have some ignition/electical issues and went thru boat cleaning/checkig connections. My 12V to coil is about 1 volt less then battery due to ressitance in circuit. I am 99.99% sure that is acceptable. If you want to troubleshoot it run a alligator wire directly from postive side of battery to + side of the coil bypassing entire boat 9hotwired) and see if the problem still exists, if it does then issue is elsewhere and you can eliminate that circuit at least.

wire directly

Re: Electrical intermitting problem kills engine

About 10 operational hours later, the problem finally reccurred with a hard fail this time. We were trolling 3 miles off shore in Lake Huron and decieded to try the trick of picking off a fish chased away from a frieghter. On an intercepting course the boat dies dead cold  I found No power out of circut breaker on the switch panel, after removing 6 screw and pulling the panel out, I quickly pulled the bildge pump wire off its breaker and reconected the spade connector that feeds the ignition wire to the key switch and i was up and running as the frieghter passed by me a few hundred feet away! I was happy it failed long enough to trouble shoot the issue, but kinda scarey how it happened!
