Hi all, I own a 1965 18 hp evinrude that wont start. I am getting fuel and I have spark. I even checked the compression on both cylinders and they both have 87lbs. It turns over and over but it just wont take off and run.

Any hints or ideas would be greatly appreciated

you dont say if the motor has been sitting or any troubleshooting you have already tried. you say you have spark, but is it a strong spark? try squirting a little fuel into the cylinders via spark plug holes just because you are getting fuel to the carb does not mean it is getting to the cylinders, if it starts you know it is a fuel problem. if you are getting fuel to the cylinders are they loading up and flooding it? you also dont mention any work that was recently performed on it, has anyone messed with it and inadvertantly crossed the plug wires? too many things that can cause what you describe.

I would verify you have ENOUGH spark by checking with a spark tester ($6 at autozone) to see if it will jump a 1/4 inch air gap. If not, then even though it jumps the spark plug gap outside the cylinder, it may not jump the gap under compression inside the cylinder. If you get reliable spark and squirt some fuel/oil mix in the carb. throat, it should start. 87lbs (if your gauge is accurate) isn't all that sporty, but it should still run. If not, it could be your spark plug wires are crossed, or your flywheel key is sheared, causing the motor to be out of time.
Just some guesses,
