1987 yamaha 150 pro-v new plugs, just replaced the stator, carbs are clean and the motor has purred like a kitten up until now. Starts great, idles great but when I go to get on it with the trim down, the motor will not get into the high gear. Rpm's with stay aroun 2000-2500. Talked to a buddy and I have had this problem in the past with the stator, my buddy thought it was the stator. Bought the manual and after reading it, I think it is the high speed trigger inside the stator, not the stator itself.
Anybody have any idea before I spend any more money on a mechanic and parts?
Recap: idles great, will not plane out with rpm's staying at around 2500.
P.S.- Have had this problem before, not the prop since motor has in the past averaged around 55mph (give or take 5-10 mphs) with two people in the boat and fishing equipment.
Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly taken.

Is the fuel old?

Yeah the fuel is old but it was running fine, then the next minute when we stopped and fished and then tried to start it and get up on plane, it didn't want to plane out. Like I originally posted, this has happened before and it cost over 400 dollars to fix it and that was just soldering a wire. I put in stable and then mercury fuel injector cleaner in it which use to make it work great. Now.... you know the story.

Fuel injector cleaner more then likely won't do anything for your carbs. I'd take them off and do a complete break down. You may try pumping the fuel bulb just to make sure the fuel pump is ok. I always do a compression check when ever I have motor issues. What does the fuel filter/water seperater look like? It wouldn't hurt to try new gas too. Good luck.

We had a similar problem and it was an alarm condition limiting the rpms. We did not have an actual alarm condition, like oil or temperature, nor was the buzzer going off, but the alarm buzzer circuit itself had a loose wire so it must fail-safe to limit the rpms.
