1987 yamaha 150 pro-v new plugs, just replaced the stator, carbs are clean and the motor has purred like a kitten up until now. Starts great, idles great but when I go to get on it with the trim down, the motor will not get into the high gear. Rpm's with stay aroun 2000-2500. Talked to a buddy and I have had this problem in the past with the stator, my buddy thought it was the stator. Bought the manual and after reading it, I think it is the high speed trigger inside the stator, not the stator itself.
Anybody have any idea before I spend any more money on a mechanic and parts?
Recap: idles great, will not plane out with rpm's staying at around 2500.
P.S.- Have had this problem before, not the prop since motor has in the past averaged around 55mph (give or take 5-10 mphs) with two people in the boat and fishing equipment.
Any ideas or thoughts would be greatly taken.
