Carb Question

i have a 2001 merc with one carb i rebuilt it last year and still have problems with it . cant seam to getthe idle mixture right .the kit i used last year had one heavy spring fore the mixture screw.the new kit has two one heavy and one light both are the same in length witch one should be used

The one most closely matching the original. Just because two springs were supplied doesn't mean both must be used. Most carb kits have parts to service two, three, or even more similar carbs in a series. As for the mixture setting, it must be done with the engine in the water, not on muffs due to the lack of exhaust back pressure. Adjust idle speed to spec. Then turn the mixture screw in in 1/8 turn, pause to allow the engine to react, then continue this process until the engine begins to slow or cough. Now start back the other way (outward) making sure you count the turns until the engine begins to slow or cough. The best setting is somewhere between those two settings. A very slightly rich setting will provide the best hammer down throttle response on a two stroke.
