.RPM problems

I have a 1992 Evinrude 88 SPL under a load in water, cannot get over 2500 RPM,s in forward. Out of water over5,000 RPMs. I did a compression check N0.1 was 98, the other three @120-125psi. Where do I start to look? Coil, linkage/sync. or would the low compression cause this. I do get 5000 RPM in reverse

First do not rev it over about 1500 rpm out of the water or you may have bigger problem than you have now. Since the number one cylinder is that low go ahead and decarb it, look in the top secret file in the forums. Go ahead and verify spark on all four that will jump a 7/16 inch gap. If the compression does not come up after a decard you may want to pull the head and see if there is any damage or if there is a head gasket problem. do that and report back, hopefully that will narrow down which direction to go in next.

your compression is out of tollerances. do not think decarb is going to help. pull cylinder head on #1 side, and investigate. has it ran hot? agree never rev over 1,500 rpms. good way to get a face full of connecting rod.
