ok heres the problem I'm faced with

my old tilt trim motor was a 3 wire, but from what I could find on the motor it should of been a 2 wire, so I bought a 2 wire, now I need a relay system set up so I can run the motor from my controls, my question is can I go to a auto store and buy relay wires used for power windows(there a 12V 30-40 amp draw)
will that work and what about the relays. if not what should I get...
thanks

Re: tilt trim question

You should have stuck with 3w. The reservoir is a different shape between 2w and 3w. If your boat had actually shipped with 2w motor then the 2w oil tubing wouldn't have reached the 3w tilt/trim ports and you would have seen something obviously out of shape. Now you have put yourself at high risk of stripping out valve body ports. So be very careful with your tubing. You need to rebend the tubing so that tube nuts can be tightened (3 spins) with fingers. Anything less and you'll strip out the ports trying to get a seal.

its funny you say that cause the 2 wire motor I got is installed and fits like a glove(also works), I looked for a 3 wire motor that would fit but couldent find one. Now I need a relay system to get the motor to run with the trim button on my controls

Your 3w motor must not be genuine parts or else there's just no way that the oil tubing should have lined up. Definitely something askew if you can swap aluminum reservoir for plastic and not have to bend tubing. If you have just mounted it but not screwed in oil lines - then take extra care when you do. I fix bunches of stripped threads and they almost always trace back to aftermarket trim motors or hasty mechanics.

Re: tilt trim question

I bought a motor with reservoir that is a 2 wire motor it fits on the base that my 3 wire was mounted to, so no I never took off the hydraulic tubes that connect to the base of a tilt motor, the motor works if I ground out one and power the other it tilts the motor, I need to add a relay system to it.
bman1bpm I looked and think I seen the post your talking about so in short yes you can.
I will try and see if that works

Re: tilt trim question

so, basically, you put a 2w trim motor on a 3w system. That can work. When your valve body starts bleeding down don't try to take tubing loose with motor still attached to transom brackets. Do it same way you did this time. motor loose from boat first then tubing loose from valve body ... and reverse when installing. That should keep you from ruining threads.
