Hey guys, I have an '84 Evinrude 50 that shifts into forward just fine and drives fine but when i shift into reverse it just clicks, no reverse at all. I removed the cable and shifted it manually and the problem still persists. If i push fairly hard on the shift linkage, the gears seem to mesh a little better but not quite go into gear. What I am wondering is, is there a way to adjust the shift linkage by removing the lower unit or does it need to be taken apart and rebuilt. I have solved several problems by cruising the posts, but this time, I'm in a pickle. Thanks

If the lower unit has been off, I'd suspect that the critical shift rod measurement has been changed..... someone screwed the rod down or up.

If the lower unit has not been off, and the engine shifted fine previously, then I would suspect lower unit problems.

The guy i got it from said the lower unit was rebuilt. I would assume that is where the problem evolved. If I remove the lower unit how would I go about adjusting the critical shift rod length? I havn't been able to find an appropriate manual yet. Thanks
