I am going to replace the lower unit oil in my 1988 150 hp Johnson V6. What type of oil should I use? Is all lower unit oils the same or is there a certain type I should get designed for my motor? I am very new here so i hope i am posting in the right forum.
Thanks

DON'T take out the phillips head screw !
Use 85/90 weight marine gear oil, available at Wal-mart. An oil pump is nice to have. Fill from the bottom.

The drain and vent screws are big slotted head screws.
Recommended to replace the plastic "washers" on the drain screws after each use.

Thanks whaler I have been told by everyone not to touch the phillips head screw. So i will make sure not to mess with it, I hear they are a major pain to back in. I just purchased the washers they look like o-rings I hope they gave me the right thing. Thanks again for your help!
Will one bottle of the oil do the trick?

Yes one bottle should do it. When oil starts coming out of the vent hole it is full. Replace the vent screw...... then when you remove the oil nozzle from the lower fill hole plug it FAST!! :D

If you don't get the pump I usually get 2 bottles and fill the one you are going to use clear to the top, makes it easier to get enough in.

i saw the pump kit at walmart. it stated on the package, not for outboards of japanese origin. will i be able to use it on my tohatsu? it sure is a pain squeezing that oil up there.

No, most Japanese motors have either a different size hole or different threads.

Jammer 040.....Any good outboard lower unti gear oil will work, but I prefer to use the Johnson/Evinrude HPF lube. It is synthetic and handles any water intrusion very well.

You only replace LU oil once a year, so I figure might as well spend the $13 on the best stuff.

The one i got at Acadamey had a extra fitting to use on Yammers too - That should cover most i think
BTW- You're kinda intruding into anothers thread - best to start your own, dont cost anything

Re: Replacing lower unit oil

I changed mine yesterday, albeit in my I/O. However, the old garden sprayer trick will work for an OB as well.

I combined these,

OK, you got me. What does this rig buy you?

Always just screwed the pump into the bottle of oil and pumped away.

You answered your own question, you don't have to pump that little pump a million times. You pump up the sprayer and it fills it up for you. Way less effort. Zero mess.
