I'm not bashing sears but some of their stuff is junk and some stuff is decent, the free lifetime replacement is the only thing they have going, but if the tool breaks you can't get the job done.
Ok , back to the snap ring, can you get it move at all, did you spray it down with penetrant, find a deepwell socket or piece of pipe that you slip over the shaft and give the snap ring a couple moderate blows with a hammer to loosen it up, if all else fails go buy or borrow a professional snap ring plier, costly but worth it.
