Re: Rectifier

The universal regulator will work fine with your engine with one modification. The universal regulator does not have a grey wire for the tach. What you have to do is jumper the grey wire to one of the yellow wires for your tach impulse.

You can buy the wire connectors at advance auto, pep boys or Westmarine.

To make a better heat sink from the regulator to the engine, go to Radio Shack and ask for a tube of heat transfer paste. It comes in a little tube about 1 inch long and costs a couple of bucks. It will help to keep your regulator cooler.

Re: Rectifier

Thanks John!!

I will jump the grey wire to one of the yellow wires.

I believe I have some CPU coolant paste/gel that acts much the same as the stuff you are recommending.

What did you think of that impeller? It is awful looking...

Re: Rectifier

I must admit, it is the worst I have seen!

If you have any pitting in the housing, clean it up with 400 wet or dry sandpaper before you put it back together. Use dish soap on the rubber impeller to help it slide into the housing.

Re: Rectifier

I showed the impeller to my bro-in-law who changed his whole water pump a few months back and he choked from laughter.

Fortunately the housing is clean. Do you know if the vanes angle CW or CCW? I believe the Clymer says CCW from shaft rotation which is CW. I am looking at figure 120 on pg 477.

Thanks

Re: Rectifier

The impeller rotates with the shaft in a clockwise direction.

The picture is showing the impeller in the housing as it should look. When you invert it to install it, it rotates clockwise.

Put some dish soap on the impeller and give it a counter clockwise turn as you are putting it in the housing and it will slide right in.

Re: Rectifier

Thanks John.

I guess simple mechanics would tell me that if I put the impeller in and the shaft rotates CW the blades/vanes that touch the housing would bend CCW.

Thanks again!!

Re: Rectifier

Look what I received in the mail today:

If I have read installation correctly:
2 yellows to 2 yellows and piggy-backed gray on one of the yellows
Black to ground
Red to Red
Thermal paste for cooling on backside of regulator.

Re: Rectifier

I have been told to use a small amount of grease on the impeller instead of soap, he said it helps prevent the impeller from drying out. I have also been told not to use grease as it could clog the passage of water. I have used grease before as well as soap without problems but I really would appreciate another opinion. Thanks

Re: Rectifier

Gato,

You are good to go and say good bye to your voltage problems.

Jaybird,

I think you are in the wrong thread. However, speaking as a mechanic with over 40 years of experience, I suggest that you use dish soap as grease reacts badly with certain types of rubber. The small amount of dish soap does no harm to the rubber.
