If you like your boat just sell the 150 and get smaller motor, should be fairly easy to do.

The one you linked needs a total rebuild, but if you want another project.....

Re: transom rebuild and other Fiberglass work

I feel your pain, I live in Birmingham, and people around here think their boats are made of gold, if they are under 2000 dollars, they are either falling completely apart, or 14' Jon boats.

I'd think about what it is you really want. Your motor, if it is in really good shape might make you think about buying a different hull, but then you would be rolling the dice all over again. Go and get you a copy of the American Classifieds for this area, there were a lot of hulls and cheaper boats that might be good transplant candidates.... I toyed with the idea myself, since the floor in mine needs replacing, but my motor and everything else seems to be in good working order. I have decided to keep my hull and go the difficult route of running it this summer as it is, and ripping everything apart this winter. I did see some really tempting transplant hulls in there though... for $500 or so.

You might find someone who will trade you motors plus give you some cash, for something you can use on your runabout.

Oh, forgot to mention, I have a boat that looks very similar in size, and probably weight, with a 1978 Mariner 80 HP motor on it. It is powerful enough to pull a skier or someone on a tube... runs about 37 mph fully trimmed with max weight aboard.

Re: transom rebuild and other Fiberglass work

Thanks Commander jonesg for the links, i've sent out an email on one and have to call about the other.

capt-pete, you are so right about the people in the Birmingham area if you go to the lake in pell city they are really good at looking down their nose at people and their boats when theirs should've been sunk 10 years ago. For me its about my family and the kids, i want them to enjoy themselves. Why pay a billion dollars when you dont have to,put in a little work yourself and there you go the same thing at 1/3 the cost. I dont mind a project a labor of love the kids will learn to respect it and maybe just maybe learn some in the process of the project. I have had outboards all of my life but i never had to set one up or work on it the some for me to learn as well. The economy has forced me to do things differently as well and im greatfull for it .

Im thinking keep the boat find a smaller motor, i sold the 55 already and all the controls let the older kids have that one, find a bigger boat for the family. And lets be honest i want to have fun to. I'm in love with both but the motor more so. But i may have a new love if i can work something out with one of these boats.

I hate John boats, But thanks again guys got my thinking cap on

Only one of the boats linked will work with your 150, so if you get the 15' you'll be right back in the same place you are now.

Re: transom rebuild and other Fiberglass work

Buddy, I admire you, I do. But good god man, I have a 150hp 74 1500 merc and my boat is 16.5' and is rated for 135. I am pushing it. Hell, before I started my rebuild I had my boat out a few times and it scared me to death the first few times till I got used to it:eek: Then the scary part is, I tore the motor down and I found that one cyl is fried along with another that was on its way. That means I was only running sortof on 4.5 of the 6 cyls... the 150 is no joke. NOT for a 14' boat and certainly not for one that a guy with very little understanding of glass and wood is learning their way through:redface: I too like the looks of your boat and I would be open to talking with you about your 150 as a potential buy for my own. PM me if interested. This could possibly make both of our days. Me, I would get a motor that was already rebuilt instead of paying to have mine machined and for you, you would get the money to buy a smaller motor and probably enough left over to buy all the proper wood and resin. Maybe. Good luck either way, but please, for your children, dont overpower that much!

ITs ok man, I am not trying to pry the motor from you. I have no problem getting mine machined but I was just trying to see if there was a way to help a fellow boater out and myself at the same time. ANyhow, you have seen my thread now so you know I am not really wanting another one! You will get this whole deal figured out. I promise! I applaud you for heading the valuable words of the fine folk here about not putting that crazy motor on your lil boat.;) Your a good man for that. and because of that, in the end, you will be a much better boat builder and person in general. Boats are supposed to provide fun and relaxation not white knuckle death defying stuntman craziness. If there is any info I can help you with feel free to ask and I will continue to visit your thread from time to time to make sure your getting along ok. Hang in there and keep your head up.

Re: transom rebuild and other Fiberglass work

Well thank you Sir, i'm new to boats im new to boat building and i'm not one of those guys who let their egos get in the way of some good advice. I like to do things right the first time even if it takes forever. Your right i want the boat to be a source of family fun. I know 150 is a beast and i doubt that i'll ever open it all the way with the family. but alone and every now and then i like being scared  half to death. How else will you know your alive.

And i to will be watching you thread and be sure if i have any questions i'll be writing.

Thanks all
