My father-in-law gave me his 4-Winns boat with 75 HP Mercury OB but couldn't find the key. It has a Quicksilver remote control panel and I've taken it apart but don't want to mess up the thing too badly. I hotwired the ignition and am able to get the engine started but I don't want to burn anything out doing this. I don't see any serial numbers or other markings of any kind ... any suggestions on how to get a new key or other ways to get more out of my boating weekends?

Run a wire from the hot small post on sel to a push button and back to the other small post on sel. Or from where you hot wired. Then if you are not happy, order new ignition for your control.

There will be a number on the ignition switch itself. Mercury only made a few different keys, and depending on the year (not specified) it will likely be 1A through 2F.

If you still can't find that number, any reputable marina service area will have a key ring with keys to test. Keys are cheap to replace.

I have a MerControl box and my key has a three digit number. One of the larger Mercury parts sites has the keys available, I forget which one now. The lock should have a number on it inside the housing.

Yeh, you will have to remove the controller from its mount and take the back off of it. As mentioned, the ignition switch will have a sticker on it with the key code. Once you have that code, most marine repair shops and marina's should be able to get you a key. I just found a key for my 38 year old controller after much searching.
