71, 18hp Rude Rough running at 1/2 Throttle

Hello, I have a 1971 18HP Evinrude that was recently not running. Worked on the carb putting in a rebuild kit. Needles looked to be in great shape. New points and condensers. No seeping or cracks on the coil packs. And new plugs. I now have the motor running. Its starts well, idles OK, and goes full throttle real well. Problem I'm having is between idle and a small amount of throttle to full on throttle the mid range does not want to run smoothly at all. Lots of stutter. I rather suspect plug wires at the minimum and perhaps compression or head gaskets at worse case scenario. Any assistance to a possible fix to this would be greatly appreciated.

I'd be hesitant to say its anything major just yet. After carb rebuild did you have low/high speed jets adjusted to spec?

I suggest the possibility of a synchronization problem. That's really odd for one to run on idle and WOT well, but not midrange.

Thanks for the input. As I am no mechanic of boat motors I had a friend who is, work the carb and I paid a lot of attention. I do believe we took out the low/high jet for inspection to find it to be in good shape. Spec,... I'm not so sure of. How many turns from all in is typical? (hmm silly question I think) I'm fairly certain we went all in and took it out 1 1/2 turns.

Synchronization. What is done to synch an outboard? What are the causes for a motor to become unsynched?

If you open the choke and look at the back of the carb., you will see the throttle plate. It should be closed when you turn the throttle all the way down. As you twist the throttle toward high speed very slowly, you should see the throttle cam on the armature plate start to turn to the right. That cam on the armature plate should have a couple of marks on it. When the cam roller hits the two marks on the throttle cam, the throttle plate in the back of the carb. should just begin to open. That means that the throttle plate and timing are synchronized. I can't remember how a '71 is set up on the throttle cam, but that should give you an idea what I mean. The throttle plate in the carb. should open at the right time as you advance armature plate. The tiller grip actually is connected by gears and such to the armature plate, and a little cam on the armature plate is what opens the throttle plate in the carb.
Motors become unsynchronized by having linkages bent, cam rollers getting grooves worn in them, and other ways. Even tiller gears jumping out of mesh and getting out of time can cause weird problems.

My low speed adjustment usually winds up between 1 1/2 turns and 1 turn out from gently seated. My high speed adjustments usually wind up about 3/4 of a turn from gently seated, but all motors are slightly different.
good luck,

After rereading your first post, I see you didn't replace the coils. I think there is also a chance you have a spark problem and you're running on one cylinder until that 2nd cylinder suddenly kicks in and gets you going wide open.
Here's a quote from a real expert that I stole for you that might help:

Per F-R:

"Do this: Remove and ground one spark plug wire and see how it runs. Then do the same thing with the other wire. Chances are, it won't make any difference with one wire grounded, but won't run at all with the other one grounded. That is the good one."

You might try this to see if that is your problem.
GOod luck,
