Re: Turning Point vs. Solas vs. QL

...he told me to absolutely never buy a Turning Point or Solas....

Let me guess - he sell merc brand props??? Did he give any reason to never buy TP or Solas????

...There just can't be that much of a difference between brands...

...and all tires are black and round so just stick to the cheap ones, cause it won't make a difference. There is just no comparison between the TP prop and a black max (standard aluminum merc). The hustler is vented, progressive pitch, cupped and has a higher rake. Merc doesn't put that much "thought" into thier aluminum props, for any kind of performance propeller you need to spend the money for stainless.

Disclaimer - yes I own and frequently run a hustler.

How did it compare to my original black max?
- same WOT - 4800, but 3mph faster and with better hole shot (comparable to one 4blader I tried) and ZERO ventilation in turns now. The Hustler is MY standard prop now, and I got rid of everything else except the shifters :D

I would still like to try a high five, but I am in no hurry, if I score one super cheap so be it.

'96 18'6" open bow, 4.3L Merc I/O. I purchased a Hustler 14.25X21 through Iboats and it's been great, and was a bargain price.

I was leaning towards Hustler but now I have fallen over...

Yep, I'm sold. And he never gave a definite reason, which made me think it was a Merc sales pitch. I appreciate the info in a big way guys.

Just one more quick suggestion, if you can, get a Legacy. Same as the Hustler but it will also accept the flo-torque hub, which I would also recomend. It will open up your options later if you need a hub or just want to try a different prop.

Re: Turning Point vs. Solas vs. QL

Great question. I took my current prop into "The Prop Doc" in Eden Prairie, MN and he told me to absolutely never buy a Turning Point or Solas....and he favored Mercury props in a big way. The man has A LOT of experience in repairing props, but how much stock does a guy take in an opinion?

He told me the same thing a few weeks ago when I brought my Hustler in for repair. Thought it was odd since I really prefer the Hustler over the 2 Black max props I've got. Mine is a couple years old so it has the integrated hub rather than using the flo torque.
