I have a new (2008) 90HP ETEC bought this week (June 2009) I have ran the motor on the boat for about 2 hours. I plan on using it for fishing and hunting. I have heard I can have the motor hooked up to computer to run the 100 or 50 oil. What are the pro's and cons to each? I will be using my boat year round from 100 degree days to days the temps are single digits. Any performance difference etc? I have heard the motor will burn less of the 100 oil if it is programed for it.

So far I am happy with the engine...glad I did not go with opti max...this blue is a new thing for me...been back and forth on which to buy but was glad I went with the ETEC.

You will use roughly half as much oil at the 100:1 ratio. Fuel economy should be no different or very little different if at all.

Re: 90 Etec Brand New

I usually run XD-50 in my older OMC outboard. I have been paying $19/gallon for it, when purchased in bulk format. I don't buy XD-100, so I'm not sure of current prices, but I have heard that it tends to go for about $35.00/gallon, in bulk.

As you have been told, the EMM program must be adjusted to burn XD-100. Doing this sets the oil mix ratio at half that of the setting for XD-50 or XD-30. Given that the cost of the XD-100 is a little under twice that of XD-50, the most obvious benefit, is that you realize a slight cost advantge.

You also get a few other advantages. XD-100 is a fully synthetic oil, while XD-50 is semi-synthetic. Although XD-50 is a superior oil that will do a good job of protecting your engine, the fully synthetic oil is somewhat better. The fact that you will use about half the oil, compared with the other oils, means that you will have less smoke. That means that your eyes/nose will be "happier," and there will also be less pollution in the water. Lastly, XD-100 is a biodegradable oil, so there is very little residual oil left behind.

Is having my engine set to do the 100 part of my warranty? I think I will go with the 100 setting...

The dealer should have asked you which oil you wanted to set it for. It's a five minute deal for him to change the oil to XD100. BTW, XD100 will typically be used ~ 85:1 in most boats (100:1 if you do nothing but troll). It's a way superior oil that eliminates the need for Carbon Guard or decarbonizing. If you want the motor to have a really long life, use XD100. I would wait until the oil tank is pretty low before having the change made. I've been using XD100 for three years in a pair of 175 Etecs and there is zero smoke and no smell at all, plus you don't need to add oil as often and your range before more is needed is way longer and cost is about the same as XD50. No contest in my mind.
