I have trim on the I/O but I'm wondering if trim tabs would increase speed? If so, any ideas on how much speed?

Re: Do I need trim tabs?

Need more info to answer your question, things like; engine make and model, rated wot rpm of engine and can you reach that wot, what prop are you running, boat make, size and weight, normal use and load. The reason this is needed is that tabs can increase speed a little but not really enough to justify the cost and you do not need to bandaid a problem with the rest of the equipment, the results will not be satisfactory. I have Smart Tabs on my boat and love them, they do a lot more than add a little speed and with that said until I know that everything else with your boat is right I won't say, go out and buy them. I am not trying to be hard on you just trying to get enough info to help me and others here to be able to answer your question.

If you have a trim problem that is preventing your boat from attaining its maximum speed then tabs can help you. If your boat runs in pretty good trim then tabs can make it ride better in different conditions, but can actually take away a few mph up top.

More info needed I guess.

I would answer your title with Absolutely!! I think they should be standard on all V-hulls . . .

As far as your question . . . Can you make her porpoise now? In a way you want to be able to, then use the tabs to control it, that's one way tabs can help you go faster.

Well... it's a omc 305(chevy). I believe it's rated at 200hp. It has the omc 800 series I/O and the prop is an old beat up 17 pitch.

The boat is a 1978 galaxy xl2200(tri-hull)- 3500lbs.

My tach crapped out on me so I can't tell you exactly what the rpms at WOT are but if I had to guess I'd say right around 5k.

I can make it porpoise uncontrollably with the power trim. On smooth water it almost never does it though even with the trim all the way up.

I will be putting a 350 hp 355 in her soon (as long as the omc 800 I/O can take it:confused:) and am planning on a 23 pitch prop... maybe higher if it has enough power to still get out of the hole decent. Hopin to hit 60-65mph. My brothers buddy just got his new motor for his jet boat so I'd like to still have bragging rights.:D

Thanks for the quick replies.
