Quick backround info
Was out on the lake this past weekend and finally got the kids out on the tube.. Well for a little bit anyway
Was taking my daughter around for her third or fourth lap when we "found" a submerged rock which all of the locals are aware of, and unfortunatly now I am as well.... Prop was bent to heck and was causing a huge vibration... Lower unit actually missed any collision so for that I am happy.....
We decided to put over to the sand bar and go swimming for a little while,, coasted up and noticed my area of choice was aweful weedy, and decided to backup and swing around to the other side...
Well,,, as soon as I put it in reverse the cable that was holding the tube rope to the transom sank and wrapped itself around the prop and shaft.. HUGE THUNK,,, cable snapped and I killed the motor..
Jumped out pulled the prop and untangled the steel cable off the shaft and put the prop back on,,, everything seemed normal and other than my bent up prob vibrations had no other problems.. Until, I noticed the white bubbly liquid floating to the surface.. CRAP! ! ! !
Idled to the launch and pulled the boat out of the water,,, leaking a ton of white milky water/oil out between the prop and the lower unit once we got the boat on the trailer.
Got home and pulled the prop off and noticed there was no cracks, smacks or damage to the drive itself, so I am hoping this is my only problem...
I think the Seal Ring (listed in the photo below) was damaged when the cable wrapped itself around the shaft..
The service manual calls for lower unit to be removed from the intermediate housing first.. then the prop, zinc ring to be removed and then a special volvo tool (884161) to be used to pull the Bearing Housing and shaft to be removed from the drive itself..
Not trying to second guess the service manual, but wondering if anyone has done this repair before and if there are any tips or tricks that I could learn to make this procedure a bit easier for this first timer.
Here is an exploded view of the lower unit and associated seal ring that I think needs to be replaced...
