Hi,

Please welcome me to boating! what an intro.

Had loads of problems with a project boat, never again !!

Basically I've got a problem with water tracking back into all 4 cylinders on my V8, 1,3,5,& 7. which is the portside bank. other side is dry as.....

I've just replaced the manifold and riser on that side which has not cured it.

Had enough, put it on ebay and some dude has suggested it could be the exhaust butterfly,

would appreciate yr help and advise prior to letting her go for peanuts.

where is it, how do I access it.

Should I continue even tho I've got no money left.
I love boating....... had it 2 years, shes seen the water ..........um never!!!!

Re: wet plugs on 1 side (help)

so did ya use a new manifold and riser? if used. they could/would be suspect maybe.
did ya use a new glm riser and manifold. i've heard from others here that they've had to true up the mating surfaces on brand new items from at least that particular vendor. might be true for others aftermarkets too... maybe... just an idea..
i doubt that the exhaust shutter is causing you issue, though i suppose ya coulda put it in with the flappers flapping the wrong way. maybe.. they're suppose to fold down in the direction of water flow out. they're supposed to flap up kinda tight if water was rushing in from the drive side..

Exhaust flapper on that side has probably melted.Check it.If it's there then the riser/manifold might might not be sealed right. J

Doubt it's the flapper..........boat hasn't seen the water(?)..........

I assume it getting water in after it's been running on the muffs?

Any water in the oil?

Water is comonh from one of three places -
Intake manifold
Exhaust manifold/elbow
head gasket

What troubleshooting have you done? Or just replace the manifold?

Re: wet plugs on 1 side (help)

Thanks for the reply's.

The manifold & riser were new, the problem started when I put the muffs on and didn't start it for approx 1 minute with the water running. Since then I have run it from a bucket with the outdrive emersed in water. problem started with the old manifold first.

As all 4 ports get wet and by that I mean that `when the engine locks and I take the plugs out, water comes gushing out.

I looked at the water pump, thermo was corroded to hell so I have taken it out.

Q. how could I put the flapper in the wrong way, never knew about it to touch it. I assume it is part of the exhaust, is it going away from the riser or towards the engine

How can I access this flapper

Are you going to sell it or fix it?
If you intend DIY, then now is a good time to get the Factory service manual.

We still don't know what you have other than a v8.

Have got the OEM manual, its my dad who has put the blood sweat, I've done the tears.
We've got to do the work ourselves as on a budget.
Will break out the book and get back to you in a week.

I guess the water must be coming from up top as I've only started it in the water (sea) once, usually do it from a set of muffs or put the leg in a big bucket.
Glad you guys think its not a block crack, would be very unlucky to have cracked accross all 4 ports.

Just to confirm, the flapper is towards the front of the boat in comparison to the exhaust manifold or is it exhaust side towards the back of the boat.?

Re: wet plugs on 1 side (help)

You should post the year/make/model.....
That said, forget the flapper, take it out if you think it is a problem....
Since you say it has water, I will assume that you have standard cooling.....
Pull the riser of & look at the mating surfaces between the riser/manifold, & if you see any sign of rust tracking, you have found your problem.....
You can plug of the water inlets to the manifold on that & run the engine for a short time(30-45 sec.)....
If you don't get any water in your cylinders, you have eliminated a cracked head, block, intake.....
I'd would say it is most likely a manifold/riser/joint failure.....;)
