1989 Force 35 hp Won't idle

Hey all new here and hoping you can help.

I have 1989 35hp force. Starts easy if fully throttled in neutral and idles great in full throttle neutral. but quickly dies when I try to pull back on throttle. Has new plugs, carb was completely rebuilt checked compression and both were 120 have tried adjusting the mixture screw on front of carb and doesn't seem to help. Fuel pump rebuilt with new diaphragm. Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Was told I may want to check the timing but I can't figure out how to do that with this motor. I have the Clymer manual that covers this motor but it doesn't have any info on how to do it...would appreciate any info given.

you should find on top of the fly wheel a timing mark. pick up a timing light at the local auto parts store (a cheapie will do) #1 and #2 should be firing 180 degrees out from one another.
