I have 2?'s, 4x5's, and a bag full of Canon digital stuff, but I'm not a photographer. I just take snapshots. It takes skill and an "eye" to be a photographer and I have neither.

I do catalog photography for my company. Stills mostly, nothing fun. I do on occasion sneak the Canon outside and shoot some urban wildlife...

I think the Seatow photo is fine. Its not easy to shoot in bright sunlight, but the job often requires doing so.

The first commercial shoot I ever did involving models, was done at high noon, because that's when the client's customer could do it. I had to shoot models on a couple of motorcycles outside of a bar that was doing a full page ad in a bike magazine. The mistake that I made was in not using a reflector or a strobe with a softbox on it, for fill lighting. With the sunlight directly overhead, I ended up with shadows under the girl's eybrows, nose, lower lip, etc.

The good news is that the graphic artist used four of them in a reduced size, so the mistake wasn't very noticeable.

I know what you are talking about with the harsh sunlight. It suks!

Here is a couple of shots (Film) I did of the wife back when she used to model.
It was around lunch time when we went on the aircraft carrier Yorktown here in the harbor and got under a airplane wing and made it work. The lighting was great coming off of the gray deck bouncing off of the wing of the plane! I didnt have to use any reflectors of flash.

Great shots from all of you. Welcome Capt, good seeing your stuff over on the other sites.
And Jay, you enhanced and sent a picture of my new KeyWest to the THT site. My wife currently has that picture as her screensaver!

Yeah, great shots. Especially that second one of Capt Rick's that everybody else likes. Capt Rick, did you punch that one up in Photoshop?

I take an occasional wildlife pic. Here's some great blue herons:

Very nice! I don't think I've ever got a good shot of a bird in flight. The third one is great!

Mike asked,,,,"Capt Rick, did you punch that one up in Photoshop?"

I dont know what you are talking about when you ask that,,But I do add just a tiny little bit of color and sharpen it in P/S.

The lens was the 70-200mm f4 L Canon. As you might know thats one of there best selling lenses.

Yeah, I guess "punching it up" isn't exactly a technical term, is it?

Just wondering what kind of postprocessing you did to it to get such a vivid result, and the answer is, very little. Impressive.

Rick, any chance that the photo we are discussing was shot with a 5D?

Re: How many other Photographers are there on the site

I agree that glass is the name of the game and Canon L-glass is extremely good, but the Canon 5D uses a full frame CMOS processor and that makes a difference too.

I shoot with a Nikon D200 with a battery grip as a primary camera and a D70 as a backup. I like the D200 alot, but it doesn't have a CMOS processor. For that reason, I will probably upgrade to a D300, which does have a CMOS, soon. To me, the CMOS processors create a warmer image, with better color rendition. D70s are ok for the lower end of the prosumer market, but I think Canon's offerings in that price range are better.

Re: How many other Photographers are there on the site

I just looked at the price of that Nikon D300,,,,WOW! 1,800.00 Shure is a lot!
The Canon XSI is only 640.00. Its also a 12mp camera
I know the CMOS processor is different, but if you are not a full time pro, why spend the money on the body, spend it on the lens. You can do some awesome work with a small sensor camera.....................
I get a very good 12"X18" enlargement thats tack sharp with my XTI. Thats all I need.

If I was to get another camera it would be the Canon 5D (Full frame) But thats 2,700.00 dollars (Its gonna be a while) Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha
