The Navy Always Taught Me To Pay Attention To Detail. Well. . .

So, the one thing that was probably pounded into my head more than anything else in the Navy was, "pay attention to detail." Let me preface this by saying I have never forgotten the plug, always remember to lock trailer to hitch, and always have everything set where I know right where to find it (although anyone else looking for something is SOL without my guidance). Knock on wood. Well, I always pay attention to the gauges, sounds of the engine, etc. so I know if there is anything "fishy." After starting the boat and idling for a few minutes, the temperature had gone dangerously near to overheating. I stop, turn off the engine, smoke a cigarette and think to myself, "Oh boy, yet another ruined outing. Seems like I work on this dang boat more than I use it." And then I remembered a small detail from earlier that morning: I FORGOT TO TAKE THE MUFFS OFF OF THE OUTDRIVE! I started it up to make sure everything was good, and forgot to remove the muffs. Normally, I would have remembered, but when you have three screaming kids fighting each other, and people rushing you via the cell phone, you tend to get in a hurry.

Well, needless to say, I jumped in and removed the muffs. Boat ran great, I slipped them in the boat without anyone noticing, and told everyone some seaweed must have clogged the impeller. No harm, no foul. I just refuse to deal with refereeing kids' battles during the pre-trip maintenance anymore.

Haven't done that yet...but:redface:I've charged the battery the night before and when I had just launched I noticed that I had forgotten to put it back in the boat..of course the game warden had shown up at this embarrassing moment and I picked up my cell phone and made some angry gestures and when I was going to get my truck I told him I hate being on call "to try and save face" he said that sucks you just got out here;)...NEVER AGAIN!

While preparing your boat adn launching, the best place for the cell phone is in the glove box. Off.
We have a place accessible only by boat, so we have to pick up those without boats. We give them a time, and tell them cell phones don't work out there. if they are late we come back 2 hours later, tide permitting. Guests can be trained.

Ha Ha... I got to my boat slip this past weekend and my boat keys were sitting on the kitchen bar:redface:. I always leave them in my truck, For some reason I put them in my pocket when we left last time out. I blame it on the kids too ;)

I FORGOT TO TAKE THE MUFFS OFF OF THE OUTDRIVE!
..Muhahahahaaaaa, Now thats funny, thanks for the laff, I needed that.
I remember going fishing early one morning, taking the boat out by myself, I get to ramp and I see about 6 or 7 young kids on the pier next to ramp fishing. The kids stopped and watched me prepare the boat, I overheard one of the boys say " Wow, I bet that cost a Million Dollars ", at that my chest started to swell with pride....now I'm backing down the ramp very slowly, I noticed the back of the boat and trailer are floating but the bow is still right there in the back window of Tahoe.....I back alittle bit further and now the back of the boat and trailer is swinging from side to side but right there in the window. Hummmm, I pull the boat back up the ramp and I'll be Dang, I didn't remove the transom tie-down.......I look up at the boys and say" Yep, she floats ok".........I overheard one of the boys say "Stupit"........I've never forgot the straps since.

And By the way, I'm an Old Navy Man myself......

now you've done it. By saying it out loud you have just made a list of things that will happen before Memorial Day:

I have never:
1. forgotten the plug, (will forget plug)
2. lock trailer to hitch, (will leave open)
3. have everything set where I know right where to find it (will disappear and reappear)
4. gauges (will go flat),
5. sounds of the engine (will sound funny)

Keep us posted!

(and don't feel bad about ruining your perfect record. I made a mistake once--I bought an eraser.)

in response to dooma i hav e two sets of keys for tyhe boat, the primary one is on the key hook in the laundry room, the wife always asks as soon as we get in the truck to go toi the slip if i have the keys. well the second set lives in thye center console of my truck. i staryted leaving them there when we moved the boat to dry storage for a few months after ike, and woulkd be out doing stuff and remember something i needed to check on the boat, well after one time not being able to get into the tools i left the spare keys in the truck. now that the boat is back in a slip and I can go out solo, or with other than the wife to remind me about the keys, thAT spare set has saved at LEAST 3 good fishing trips.

Double redundancy is the key to safe and successful boating. Or to put it another way, double redundancy is the key to safe and successful boating.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

When I was in the Navy, I often referred to page eleventy-one of the double-standards manual manual.

Re: The Navy Always Taught Me To Pay Attention To Detail. Well. . .

I have never left my keys at home, well generally I never take them out of the boat. I figured if someone's gonna steal the boat, might as well leave the keys in there so they don't have to go tearing out my ignition. Plus, not many people are brave enough to step foot on the property where my boat is stored. If that one is lost, then I use the one in the boat's glovebox. That must suck, not realizing your keys or battery are at home until you get to the boat ramp.

I am proud to say that I have only locked the keys in my car once, and due to some extraordinary circumstances. I was a broke kid, driving my parents' minivan that they loaned me, and the van got stolen. Now, I got the van back, but the ignition was busted. I was too broke to fix it, so I resorted to starting it with a screwdriver. I used the keys to unlock it, and the screwdriver to start it. I usually put the keys right in my pocket after unlocking the door, but one time I left them on my lap while driving, and they fell on the floor, out of sight. Of course, just as I was shutting the door, I realized this, but it was too late. To make matters worse, we were going to a "social gathering" about 40 miles away, and had to wait an hour and a half for the pop-a-lock people.

keep an extra boat key deep in a tool box or wired/tied up in a hatch somewhere. Keep an extra car key wired to the frame somewhere. Don't use magnet hiders; we lived next to a bump in the road and used to collect them there!

Re: The Navy Always Taught Me To Pay Attention To Detail. Well. . .

Well, just this past monday I left my boat keys with a co-worker who is also a lock smith, because I only had 1 set and wanted 2 more for back up. Up until an hour ago I completely forgot I gave him the keys, and I am heading out early tomorrow for a full day on the water. Well he came walking in dangling my keys asking if I knew who they belonged to, because he completely forgot who gave them to him. Pure luck that my weekend was not ruined, and honestly I would have no good explaination to the wife, as to how I could forget that I gave away the boat keys. It would have been ugly.......

I leave my boat at a boat slip and I don't want the keys in plain sight there. I sent my wife by the locksmith today and had 3 copies made. One for her one for me and one goes in my tackle bag that I keep with me at all times:p. I'm set now.. I think unless I forget something else,,, gps, cooler, kids;)
