I have a 1978 Mercruiser 260 and WOT rpms are 5000, sounds too high to me. How do I determine the size and pitch of the SS prop that is on the outdrive?

Re: WOT 5K rpms

Size is usually on the barrel of the prop or under the prop nut.
Rpm rating may be on a label on the motor. Probably 4600-4800 rpm.
Please read the stickies at the topo of the page If you get us the info we can tell better if its a prop, tach or other problem.

Pitch is usually on the prop. If you are running that high then you need to go up in pitch from a 19 to 21.
You should try the boat with 2 people and at least a 1/2 tank of fuel and the regular equipment you carry.Get it up on plane and trimmed up to optimum speed. Then check WOT and see what the rpm is.It should be around 44-4800.
Do the test and get back to us.J
