Re: People tryin to hitch a ride for 4th of july!!

My problem is the wife inviting too many people out. LOL My toon is rated for 16, Has seating for about 12 but 10 can chill in comfort. I won't we tubing this weekend due to lake traffic so I don't mind having a full boat. We have a couple of friends that always bring the beer and insist on paying the ramp fee.

I hate the ones that say I have to be dropped at the ramp at 5:00.... I tell them the return trip is $20 or you can swim.... (I will even lend them a PDF) LOL

There's this two letter word in the dictionary I learned to use once I had Kids "NO". Was hard a first but it got easier with time.:D

Re: People tryin to hitch a ride for 4th of july!!

I've got another example to share- my in-laws are signing me up to tow either a 16' Airstream camper or an 18' fiberglass CC 4 hours north for the weekend.

My Explorer should be ok to do this but that means I won't be able to bring my little 12' tinny like I planned(we are going bluegill/pike fishing on a reservoir that is full of stumps-good for a little boat/canoe).

Not sure what to say about it since I probably won't even be using their boat or camper for the entire weekend and I'll be paddling the canoe around instead.

My question: Would you guys ask for gas money and do the towing or reply with "well if you want to try hooking up your camper behind my little boat have at it" (obviously not a good plan).

Re: People tryin to hitch a ride for 4th of july!!

The biggest thing I run into is;
"you're going out anyway, why can't I go"
"I have to get home, I'll help clean next time"
and my personal favorite,
"I'm outta beer, can I have one of yours"

My family is trying to invite themselves and then throwing in the "guilt trip". It got real old real fast! I told my wife we are going over to the Mississippi this weekend. My family is now crying because they don't want to drive home from there...blah, blah, blah.

I decided that a little out of my way will be a much better time for just my wife, girls, and I.

I am not greedy or selfish, I just get tired of everyone "hitching a ride"!

A friend of mine has three rules on his boat.
1) The captain has 12 beers in the cooler.
2) No one drinks the captains beer.
3) The boat leaves with a full tank and it WILL come back with a full tank.

ESPECIALLY on holidays!
Actually, almost every weekend (when the crowds are about).
I'm retired so time is the way I want to spend it.
Weekends & holidays I prefer not to do the "launch thang" (I trailer).
When I do go out on these buisy times it starts with early morning Bass fishing. Justifys getting in before the crowds. Plus, I don't come back until after dark.
Most want to go after 10:00 and be back for dinner. (Peak ramp times)

Only one I generally ask out now is the dog. Definately man's best friend for a reason! ;) Always happy and ready to go. (and go, and go, and go!)

Well..
You guys are lucky..You actually have the option to go/no go with your "friends".

I guess I'll be there once my project hits the water! ;)
I have few friends here since I moved to FL, but my one "buddy" calls every couple weeks and wants to know WHEN my boat will be ready so WE can go out and drink some beers...I guess this shows what is to come in the future.

The best thing though is I can take customers out for a day of fishing or cruising during the week or on a weekend for that matter and expense everything, food, gas, beer, bait..ramp fees...Basically anything involved...That I am looking forward to!

Me and the family out = cheese & baloney sandwiches:(

Fortunately we don't have that problem realy...yet. If I invite friends out, I don't expect them to pay. However, if asked to go out, I just say I haven't got enough fuel to go, but if they'd like to split a fill up (truck and boat) we can go. This helps pay for all the trips I invited out for. I try to forwarn them how much a fill up costs.

My feelings exactly. If I ask you to go, bring your beer and snacks.
If YOU ask to go...pony up!

A lot of people who don't have a boat, do not know the expense, time, and detail that goes into keeping a boat on the water.

Those that do, have sold theirs.

"You can pick him up at 8 (their house is 30 miles away) and then bring him back after 6."

So not only do they want you to babysit, but they expect you to be a taxi service as well? That's just ridiculous.

The guilt trip is the funniest! "Oh I really would like to go on your boat, oh I wish I could bring beer, I forgot to bring food." I return the guilt trip right back at them: "Oh, I ONLY had to work 12 hours this week just to put gas in the boat and the truck. Oh, I would love to let you come on the boat, but I just can't wash it by myself anymore. Oh, I can't go on the boat with no food, what if something happens?"

Well this 4th I will take my wife and four of her girlfriends. We hang out at a shallow spot in the lake that can only be reached by boat. Two of the girls are bringing food for everyone. I will supply the gas, tow vehicle and all the beer they can handle. And I will be smiling the whole time. (something about five chics in bathing suits just makes it worth it)

Re: People tryin to hitch a ride for 4th of july!!

I have been planning this years 4th for a year now. Planned on 5 people in my 8person capacity boat. My gas my GF's food... I do not mind since it is my activity. BUT now all of a sudden a friend I only see once every two years get wind of this great plan I have for the fireworks and simply invites himself and his GF on my boat. WTF... I said we would love to have you come down for the holiday weekend, he lives 8 hrs away, but you will have to be on the land for the fireworks.

NOw all of a sudden the GF says he is a good friend and its not fair to leave him on land since technically I can handle an extra two people.

SOmehow my years worth of planning this weekend has been taken completly away from me and is in the hands of others. S*&T:mad:

Re: People tryin to hitch a ride for 4th of july!!

Got another today.

I invited a couple out on Sunday- nice people, brought beer and food last time. The woman goes "Is the jetski involved at all?" I said "ha no, way too many people out this weekend for that" and I then said "why, are you looking to drive it or ride on it"

She says "Well you know my boyfriend likes fast toys"

---I have a 2007 Honda R12X Turbo ski---

Goes about 65 on glass with the wind at your back........WHY ON EARTH does she just assume I'm going to let her boyfriend drive my (when I bought it) 8000 dollar jetski??

I responded "do you guys have your license?" - She says "What? cmon we don't need those"

I said "Well I can't let you drive my very expensive jetski if you don't, aside from the fact that if you mess it up you're paying for it, is the fact that my insurance doesn't cover ANYTHING, injury to you, to others or to the ski without a license."

She asked where they could get them.

Sigh......................

When they get them they still aren't going to be DRIVING my jetski. It's a very fast craft that weighs 1000 lbs.

Re: People tryin to hitch a ride for 4th of july!!

Interesting thread........

I got a really good deal, so although I won't be retiring for about 8 months (and then moving to Florida where I have a home) I bought a boat down there last March...all bundled up waiting for me!!

I can see from all of comments what I'm in for........lol.

I did actually have a couple of people from the park where my house is, comment that they "would love to go out on the boat when we get down there...." So, I guess has pretty much already started....lol.

Also, none of my friends have boats down there.....and I'm sure I'll get plenty of "visitors" from the North finding their way down to me.....

You will have to tow your boat over here because my capacity is only six people. We can fill up yours with more of my wife?s friends.:D
Ever since my wife started these weekly girls only card games my life became so much more interesting (they decided I can stay because it?s my house, they love my BBQ and I don?t have a place to go by myself once a week)

I was annoyed when my wife first started it, I quickly got over it. You should suggest it to your wife, you can?t go wrong my friend.;)

Re: People tryin to hitch a ride for 4th of july!!

I never boat near home so no one ever asks if they can come along. When I do go out, I always ask my immediate family if they can come, and its always my treat. Although my Dad often slips me the the cash for gas. Just his way of showing appreciation for the work and expense involved with owning the boat and towing it 150 miles to his shore house. Also for the odd jobs I do on his shore house to cover our stay.

If I had people inviting themselves out for a day on the boat, I would just stop associating with them.
