It all started with the motor being really hard to start after running for a while, sitting in one spot for a while, and then trying to start it again. Very hard to get started. Primer bulb would never get hard when pumped.
Engine now has a cough or hiccup occasionally at idle - rarely stalls at idle. It also wants to occasionally load up and stall when going into gear. Not nearly as bad as it was, but still there. I have been replacing or rebuilding various systems to try to find the culprit. We are getting close. but not quite there yet. So far, I have changed the primer bulb and rebuilt the fuel pump, replaced fuel filter, ran all fuel out of tank and replaced with fresh, new spark plugs - #QL82C, replaced rollers on cam follower - #432572 and carb - #432639 (they were very worn), tested primer solenoid with a syringe and alcohol, changed spark plugs to Champion QL77JC4 from QL82C, rebuilt carbs following video instructions and Johnson service manual (first time ever rebuilding a carb). Before I rebuilt the carbs, there was this bluish white ooze coming from one of the tubes in front of one of the throttle plates. I also found a little something in one of the idle jets and a little something else in one of the high speed jets. Sprayed with carb cleaner and blew them all out with compressor. Rebuild kit included new floats and needles. Changed fuel filter again.
Boat starts great and runs much better after the carb rebuild. Primer bulb now gets and stays hard. Motor still has a periodic sputter and trys to load up when going into gear and throtlling up.
Same issues when using an external fuel tank.
Any suggestions are welcome.
