I need help. I have a 1992 Four Winns with a 4.3L OMC Cobra that nearly, and sometimes shuts off when i put it in to gear. I can start it fine and rev it up in neutral and it goes great, but as soon as i put it into gear it bogs down and tries to die on me. If I accelerate very slow finally after about 15 seconds it will get gas to it and take off. As long as i stay going it runs great as well, but as soon as i stop and try to take off again it does the same thing. I just had the carb rebuilt thinking that was the issue, but no luck.

If any one knows anything about what this could be please let me know. I really need some ideas. I have heard it could be the timing. Does anyone know what the timing needs to be set at.

thanks

99.9% chance it is your carb. more to the point the accelerator pump in your carb.

Take the flame arrestor off look in the carb and have someone pump the throttle. You should see 2 little streams of gas shooting in the the openings.

I'll bet you don't.

During carb rebuild (yes you are heading there) it is important to compare the spring on the pump assy that comes in the rebuild kit with your old one. Use whichever one is stiffest your old one or the new one. Take it off your old pump assy. if needed. Makes a big differance. A lot of the kits come with softer automotive springs.

It was giving me the same problem before the carb was rebuilt, I will recheck that. Anything else that it might be?

I had the same problem with my boat. It was my fuel pump cutting out and I would intermittently run out of gas in the carb. This was a problem until the fuel pump gave out. I had my fuel pump replaced and my boat mechanic found out from a 1993 OMC Service Bulletin the the fuel pump circuit breaker was supposed to have been changed out on my 1993 OMC 4.3L motor to prevent malfunctions with the fuel pump. He replaced the circuit breaker with the correct one and I have had no problems with it so far. Hope this helps.
