I have a 1972 GLASTRON v 153. I got a hole in the floor that i want to fix. My question is . After i fix the hole i want to put a piece of 1/2 inch plastic plywood down.Do i need to fiber glass both pieces or neither. I'm on a stricked budget but want to do it right or at least be safe in the water.

First , welcome , your in the right spot !!!

your asking a loaded question there, how is it a hole, or is it a soft spot ?If it is a soft spot, you got bigger problems, more the likely the stringers are shot also, Sorry to tell yea that , I just finished a 76 glastron sportster, and mine were gone , dry rotted, glastron didnt make a boat to last then, they wanted you to buy a new one in 10 years !!!

now for the good news were all here to help all we can !! I now what you mean on a budget, that why took mine 2 years to do !!! but if yours is like any thing mine was , it wasnt safe !!

Ok in your hole can you see the stringers , if so you need to take a core sample, take a drill and drill in to then and see how the wood comes out on the drill, dry wet, soft , !!!

If you can get some pics up and we will be able to help more !! John

may I ask how one gets a 3'x3' "hole" in their floor without there being rot involved? Curious?

Also, digital cameras don't have to cost much. You can get a basic older model for as little as $20, if you want to go really cheap go to wal-mart and look at their camera section... they carry a range of kids' cameras, which are all pink and blue plastic, but which do take cell phone quality pictures.

I think they were on sale last time I saw 'em for $10 or so too.

We can try to help if you describe what's going on, but pictures will help us help you.

Re: new to this

What is "plastic plywood"?

Personally I would use a good grade of 1/2 plywood and just cover it generously with epoxy resin. Go over that with what ever flooring material your using. Of course you could use fiberglass cloth also but like you said there is a budget consideration.

Since your new to this, you might want to try searching this forum a little more. So many posts with so much to learn just by reading. Will give you great ideas on products and techniques to use. Once you find a thread you like move down to bottom of page and you will find more similar and related threads available.

I agree with the rest. Get a camera. Pictures say a thousand words and people get an accurate sense of exactly what your talking about. Your going to need a camera to take pictures of you and all your kids having fun on your boat anyway.

Good Luck

if its not going to be covered in glass, then use epoxy resin... poly wont be that strong.

Re: new to this

dARN those child labor laws.

Allow about $50 for decent PT plywood, gallon of resin and some glass mat.
Glass it both sides, seal the edges with 2-3 coats of resin and screw it down.
Stainless screws. Should be ok.

then sell it.

I would only use PT if you have 6 months to let it dry.
