Rebuilt carbs myself, still fuel coming out the front

So, first of all let me say, the shop is on crack for charing 400 dollars to rebuild 3 carbs, this was cake. I was expecting it to be much worse. Ive never done it and it took me 1 hour to tear down and about 2 hours to put back together. I cleaned everything out, used a thin wire from a bread tie. Worked perfect, there were some clogs. Some loose screws and the gaskets were saturated.

I did the little blow trick, everything seams fine. The little line that comes from the shrator valve was clogged on all three carbs, TINY little hole.

So I fire her up for about 10 seconds. Looked at the carbs and the front of them was wet already, so somehow for whatever reason fuel is coming back out of the carbs and then dripping down the air box and soaking the gasket then leaking down under the motor and geting my new hoses wet, cause none of my work was leaking.

What causes the fuel to come out of the front of the carbs? Thats my question.

Thanks a lot guys

Btw I have the early model carb without the jet on top for my 70 Evinrude 89

EDIT: I bet thats why it's flooding, I mixed it 2 quarts lean today and it still smoked rich, and its horrible on fuel. I can burn 9 gallons in an hour or 2. It's going in the airbox and some of it is dripping down and some is getting sucked back in through the air intake. Aye?

Sounds like your float level isn't correct or your float valves aren't operating correctly. You did the blow test, so time to re-check your float level.

You might want to check that your primer solenoid valve is functioning properly.

With the red handle correctly aligned with the large cylindrical base of the solenoid, no fuel should flow through unless you have the ignition key pushed in. You can check it by disconnecting a primer line at the carburetor and squeezing the primer bulb.

Check the reed valves behind the carbs in the intake. You might have a broken leaf or something got sucked through the carb and is holding one of them open. Worth a look ......

I used the needle and seat from the existing new rebuild kit. Its only like 3 weeks old. Is that ok?

should be fine, but the float does not seem to be set right if gas is coming out the front.

I've got it all tore down, Ill go take some pics. Might shed some light. Most of you guys know about these carbs really well, plus they are pretty basic.

Thanks for helping the learning man!

i guess you are finding out why they charge so much to rebuild the carbs.
its not just only cleaning them out, its about making it work the way it is supposed to and test it.
and if it doesnt find out why and fix it.
and they only cherge you a flat rate from the book.
sometimes they beat it and sometimes they dont.

I reckon.

I rebuilt them again today, readjusted the floats, the needle and seat is fine on all three its all brand new. Everytime I turn the engine off fuel pours out of the front of all three carbs, the top and bottom the most. And you can see fuel spraying out of the top carb. It's definitly enough to get sucked back in and flood, thats why I have so many problems, its constantly flooded, rich and fouling my plugs.

Those floats are allowing too much fuel to stay in there, some how. I dont understand why, it's set, maybe I need to bend the things even more, I have them adjusted allowing less fuel in the bowl already, they arent flush when upside down anymore.

I'de say between the three carbs its about 1 cup of fuel wasted everytime I shut it off.

Someone please help.

Is it possible that the primer is stuck in the ON position?

Did you test your primer solenoid valve yet?

Yeah, I saw that.
The primer is about the only "common" thing that will cause catastrophic flooding of all 3 carburetors at once...

How do I know it's stuck in the ON position? I have taken it apart before and replaced the gasket in there, insuring passages were clean. If it twists right it closes the valve, if the red knob on the valve stem twisted pointing the same way as the cylinder it closes, from my observation.

If I turn the knob clockwise while its running it shuts off and fuel comes out.

The primer solenoid is just a valve, it is open or shut. Unless you have the key pushed in to operate the solenoid, the valve should be shut. If the valve itself does not work, you don't fix it, you replace it: http://www.iboats.com/Johnson_Evinr...2838190--**********.291603682--view_id.503919

If you want to update with a schrader valve for decarbon treatment or fogging: http://www.iboats.com/Johnson_Evinr...2838190--**********.291603682--view_id.503916

If you would rather use the OEM parts from your local dealer, they are #437228 and #175158.
