I am looking to repower my boat. i am looking for an outboard in the range of 90hp to 1120hp. does anybody know of a place in South Florida that sells used outboards that doesnt charge for them like they are new? i have searched craigslist and ebay with not much luck, most of the motors are junk and way over priced for what you get and the sellers are not willing to negotiate. any suggetions? thanks

Re: No Luck Finding A Replacement Outboard

First time I ever had the occasion to give it much thought. Have to wonder, where are these used motors coming from? Maby off a boat that is being repowered. OK, why is it being repowered?
DEMO motor off a rental? Ever noticed how people treat rent a cars, have never seen marinas jump out and take care of a motor unless the boat has been towed in.
Stolen? That is certainly possible. Old boat sitting around in the driveway or under a tree? Give away price for the set up, junk the boat and trailer and sell the motor for a handsome profit. Good luck, see people do it for a hobby but wont make a living doing it.
All of the motors you will find around FL. are saltwater engines. Other than mine, how many are flushed properly after each use regardless if you are 3 sheets to the wind. You are not going to find a pristine mountain lake motor down here.
Going to go out on a limb, get yourself a brand new motor. Get something that will match up to your current controls and wire harness. Shop around, some guys are overstocked right now and are happy to move the inventory. Just ask RODBOLT, he steals these thing but he is in the business. I am biased but there are still old tech motors out there still in the box ( got a 50 YAMAHA ) that will run fine for years. Yould not be surprised if you could not find a 90-2 stroke around. No EFI-DFI-FADIC- gee wiz computer controlled stuff, just something that will start each time and turn the propeller.
Other than the guys here who want to sell used motors, am sure that all will agree that you need, deserve, have a right to a nice new mid range motor. Have the wife get a second job, have the kids shovel snow ( er, rake leaves) sell the wifes car. Do the inlaws have any jewlery laying around that wont be missed? You get the idea ! Dont spend big bucks on a dubious motor when you can have something new for a few $ss more and know you have something reliable. regards FRED

Well, you've answered your own question, I think. A 90-120 hp outboard in excellent running condition is a valuable commodity. So, the prices for such outboards are high. Junky ones that haven't been maintained or that have problems are cheaper.

You get what you pay for, most of the time, and there it is.

Now if you lived up here in Gods country, you could try here which is just one of a gazillion boat dealers north of the M-D line. You might also search on-line for "non-current outboards". These are new, but not current production. However Yamaha and Merc have dropped the model year designations so you now have one more hurdle to jump over when buying a used outboard.
