what is a good price for a used 90hp Johnson Outboard? The ad reads- "90 hp. johnson runs needs minor carb work. The motor has good compression 120 psi on all cylinders and trim and tilt works good. Steering on motor is a little stiff but i was told if you heat it the steering will loosen it up.The reason i am selling the motor is because i am repowering." the seller is asking $500 with controls. i have not seen the motor yet, i am planning to go look at it Sunday. it is listed in local Boat trader and there is no photo.

Tilt and trim is worth a couple hundred dollars in itself. I think its a steal depending on year/condition, as well as verifying the information you were given. I would perform a compression test to verify. "Minor" carb work is a vague. Whose diagnosis was it that it needs carb work? Could be an ignition problem as well. Get some more information, and if you feel comfortable, get it. I just paid $500 for a Evinrude 48 that needed work, and I'm still working on it. A good running 90 will probably bring $1200 or more depending on condition, so if you play your cards right, you could save yourself some money this way. You will also want to check out the foot to make sure it is good as well.

yes i had planned on doing comp tests myself as well as hearing it run, because in my mind "minor carb adjustment" means it runs. thanks for the input.

Johnny 90s have been around for at least 40 years and changed immensely.

Model number is required.

i just spoke to the seller, he said it is an "86" model and it runs pretty good but he thinks it could run a little better with a carb adjustment and i am going in the morning to look at it. it will be replacing a 1984 Chrysler 75hp on my boat so even if it needs somthing i think parts will be alot easier to find. plus i think i should be able to get at least half the cost of the johnson for the chrysler so really i will only be paying about $200 out of pocket if not less. oh yea, transom seems very solid. thanks

I dunno... seems almost too good a deal to me. I'm always leery on the larger engines as there's so much more to go wrong! Hope it works out though.

It hasn't been maintained , thats evident already.
Check the gear oil.
Could be great or junk.
Its priced around the junk level.

If it is in good health then it is a good buy. You will have to determine that when you see it. Do all the necessary checks and hear it running. Go from there.

Excellent point. I have been fresh water only for so long now that the salt water thing did not even come to mind.

Re: used Johnson Outboard for sale

ok, I am going to look at this motor tomorrow. i was told by the seller that it idles a little rough but above idle, it runs fine. I have never owned a Johnson before, are there any common problems of 90hp Johnsons from 1986 that i should look for? I'm a little hessitant about buying it, it just seems to good to be true at that price, it has been listed for about a week and a half now and still not sold which makes me wonder... as far as the rough idle, the seller claims it needs "minor carb work" and he claims he uses it about every 3 weeks or so. He also claims the lower end was just rebuilt and can show proof. any help for what to look for other than the normal stuff would be greatly appreciated.

Re: used Johnson Outboard for sale

I have attached some pics of the motor the seller just sent to me. I know they dont tell you much about the internal parts, but maybe one of you can tell me something that commonly should be checked for this specific motor. thanks again.

Re: used Johnson Outboard for sale

I'd say theres something wrong with it, test run it,
compression test it YOURSELF. Check lower unit oil, pull prop examine shaft.

for comparison, obviously the one listed below has a problem which the seller discloses.(Compression)

if a seller acts like theres nothing wrong but prices it at a problem engine price...I don't like that. What else are they not disclosing?
I assume a junk price is because its junk til proven otherwise.

Definitely worth checking out. If in good shape it's a great motor. Good luck.

Re: used Johnson Outboard for sale

Well, I bought the motor. Paid $350 for the motor only. It starts right up, but definatly has a miss, but i figured even if the motor blows the first time I use it I can get my money back by selling it for parts. gotta find controls and harness for it now. Thanks again for everyones input.
