Here are some pictures of my renovated 1966 Starcraft Nassau:

It had sat in a barn for 25 years and was unmolested - no holes in it for various add-ons. I gutted it; put a new floor in, new seats, new paint - looks brand new ? probably better than brand new! The Merc 80 is a little overkill ? but like power tools more is better. Here is the tale of the tape:

Boat - $900
Sold 1960 Evinrude Lark 40 ? ($200)
Seats - $350
New Merc $900
Trailer Rework - $150
Decko Dot Flooring $100
Interior Stuff - $40
Paint - $100

I would comment on this: I would avoid the Decko Dot flooring simply because every piece of dirt shows. The polyurethane paint looks professional after you buff it out ? I think this is true with any paint. I wish I had kept the old seats and had them redone instead of new ones (although the new Wise seats have storage). I would suggest for those starting a new boat ? the primary thing I had going for me was everything was there ? all the little handles, screws, attachments, doors etc. When I do another ? I would make sure that you buy a boat with all the do-dads still attached. Lots of fun ? goes like stink. Love looking at everyone?s projects ? although I probably will never have the courage for a big glass project ? and no never wood!.

Re: 1966 Starcraft Nassau

I have that exact boat in my yard right now. A 66 Nassau project with a 65 merc.

Welcome to iboats you boat looks great!

My plan was (past tense) to restore the Nassau but I am picking up a SuperSport this weekend which is a basket case.

You are among good company here.... we are all starcraft addicts! I own two (hopefully 3 by morning ;)).

I see you are from LI (that's where I grew up) what water are you running the boat in?

Here is what it looked like last year!

Also - Glad to see all the Starcraft love here - I know some look rather clunky - but some have great lines and they sure used to build them well.

Re: 1966 Starcraft Nassau

When I say "too much" I mean this. We had a "Starmist" when I was a kid - almost the same boat - it had a 1960 Starflight 75 - a beast. That boat went about 32 with the "speed prop". This is a 1978 Merc and we had it going 40 on the Garmin - and I didn't have the throttle linkage tweaked still had some left. This model maybe be 16' - but its not too beamy - and 40 is just about as fast as I would want to do. The Merc is a great motor - got it on Ebay - it fires immediately - also love the sound of the merc - my kids says its growls.

Re: 1966 Starcraft Nassau

Clark,
could you post more photos with detail of interior, I just acquired my grandfathers 66 Nassau and loved what you did with yours. My grandfathers has seen alot of abuse over the years, my uncle did a rough rebuild with plastic seats and cheap carpet. I am going to use plastic floor to replace the rotted plywood but need some ideas for the interior. You did such a great job, I might wish to copy some of your ideas. Do you buy chance know anyone with the patterns to replace the bimini top? Mine was missing when I got it, even a sketch with the measurements would be helpful in rebuilding it.
Thanks for any help you could give me.

Re: 1966 Starcraft Nassau

I'll try to respond to the interior question. I lost my camera at the family reunion (beer!) this weekend but some pics of the interior can be seen ebay listing number 250470025386 - Yes I just sold the Nassau - I want to redo another - to stay in the club!

Lots of great ideas here - but I just wanted to make the interior as simple as possible - like original. Here is what I did:

I bought the seats from Wise ($350)and bought matching interior vinyl from them (cheap - like 30 bucks)

I wrapped the dash, back sliding doors, and the interior panels with the Wise Vinyl. I used 3M 77 spray glue when applying the Vinyl to the pieces and stapled them on the back - this is really easy. I reused the original wood sections - and as I said in another thread - don't pull the dash wood off - you don't have to - you can pull the inteiror rub rail off to get the new vinyl underneath. Everything comes off and goes back on easy.

Don't forget to spray the interior behind the panels with spray paint!

I am not sure what plastic floor you are using - I think it should be structural - make sure the plastic is strong enough not to deflect. I used marine plywood. I bought Deco Dot flooring - I would use the redrum or marideck stuff if I did it again. I used the marine glue to lay the flooring down - in 2-3 foot sections - rolling the floor out over it. If you get some bubbles when this happens - prick a hole in it and it will disappear in a day or two.

I bought a old speedo off ebay and it had the old sterring wheel. That's it - real simple. I'll try to find the pics. Other than that - steel wooled the rub rails.

Hope that helps.

Re: 1966 Starcraft Nassau

Clark,

Thanks for the tips, that will help. The plastic floor is a structural laminated product, like plywood, only made of plastic. I'm trying to save up for this stuff and hope to start by spring. The boat is gutted back to the shell and is just waiting for me. I intend on making the transom and dash out of the floor product. The manufacturer assures me the product is durable and is available in various thicknesses. My plastic decals are missing and local dealers offer no help, any ideas? And lastly, tried e-mailing starcraft with questions, no reply, you think they would want to help. I'm north of Toronto, Ontario very few places up here to find old parts, this is going to be a looooooong project.

Re: 1966 Starcraft Nassau

Having a hell of a time getting anything in print for a 66 nassau. Does anyone out there have an owners manual or pamphlet for this boat? Still would love to see any more pictures available of works in progress. New to the world of computers and dont have any pictures of the boat yet. Also trying to find dimensions or replacement parts for the windshield and bimini top, any help out there?
